Sadiq Khan tells Amber Rudd to quit over Windrush scandal

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, has piled further pressure on Amber Rudd to resign as home secretary as he launched a devastating attack on her “inhumane treatment” of immigrants in towns and cities across the country. His intervention, in an article in the Observer, comes as millions of voters prepare to go the polls on Thursday in local elections in which Labour hopes to seize flagship Tory councils in London and other urban areas. 'No basis to remain': woman, 63, told she will be removed from UK to Jamaica Read more But allies said that revelations in the Guardian on Friday that Rudd had in fact been informed of specific targets for the removal of immigrants – having been copied in on a detailed six-page memo giving details of them – were the last straw. What the home secretary and prime minister don’t appear to understand is that the Windrush scandal is the direct consequence of their policies and not just another example of the administrative chaos at the Home Office. We know this because they have repeatedly bragged about this for years.” Rudd’s future and controversy over Tory immigration policy look certain to become a central factor in the many high-profile contests in Thursday’s elections. Timeline Amber Rudd's apologies The home secretary has issued five apologies in the last week – four of them over her department's handling of the Windrush crisis and immigration targets. 26 April 2018 On Thursday afternoon, Rudd was forced to issue a hasty clarification after appearing to leave the door open to the UK staying in a customs union with the EU. 27 April 2018 In a series of late-night tweets, Rudd apologised for not being aware of documents, leaked to the Guardian, which set out immigration removal targets. ‘I wasn’t aware of specific removal targets. I didn’t see the leaked document, although it was copied to my office as many documents are."

Lobbyist retires early following Scott Pruitt condo scandal

The fossil-fuels lobbyist tied to a bargain-priced Capitol Hill condo that was leased by Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt is taking early retirement as a result of the scandal. EPA inspector general to investigate Scott Pruitt's security detail on trips Read more Pruitt remains in his job, with the expressed backing of Donald Trump, despite a chorus of Democrats and a growing list of Republicans calling for Pruitt to be fired amid a string of ethics issues, including questions about his use of first class air travel and such pricey security precautions as a $43,000 anti-eavesdropping phone booth for his office. The lobbyist, J Steven Hart, sent an email to friends and colleagues on Friday, announcing that he is leaving Williams and Jensen, the powerhouse Washington lobbying firm where he was chairman. Hart, 64, said he had been planning to retire in November but intense scrutiny resulting from the unusual rental arrangement with Pruitt had led him to expedite his departure. “I want to thank so many of you who have taken the time to send me and Vicki notes and flowers as we learned a new and personal meaning of ‘Fake News’ and ‘Real Friends’.” he wrote. “They say if you need a friend in Washington, get a dog. We now know that adage is not always accurate.” Pruitt has described Hart as a friend and insisted that he paid a market rate for the condo. Comparable properties nearby are publicly listed at more than double what he paid. Campaign finance records show the lobbyist hosted a 2014 fundraiser for Pruitt’s state re-election effort where more than three dozen OGE executives cut checks, even though he was running without a Democratic opponent. The EPA press office did not respond to a request for comment.

Two big cheating scandals plague our politics

Cheating isn’t winning. Political cheating allows those who engage in it to amass far more power than they have a right to in a constitutional democracy. And on Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard a case that turns on whether Maryland’s gerrymandered district boundaries deprive Republicans of fair representation in Congress. Such concerns have increased exponentially with President Trump targeting undocumented immigrants with a proud and public ferocity. The lateness of his decision means the citizenship question will not be subjected to the bureau’s usual extensive testing for the effect of new inquiries on the accuracy of the overall count. California is one of at least 12 states trying to block the move. And political cheating at its purest and most obvious is gerrymandering — drawing district lines to maximize your party’s representation in legislative bodies and minimize the number of seats your opponents can win. Because so many of the state legislatures that drew district lines after the 2010 Census were controlled by Republicans, an end to gerrymandering now would be especially challenging to the GOP. In Maryland, a formerly Republican district based in the rural and western parts of the state was chopped up, its pieces redistributed in a way that reduced the GOP to only one seat in the state’s eight-member House delegation. The increasingly aggressive activism of conservative judges has made this a live concern on the left as well.
