Northam’s political future could be over because of clumsy handling of racism scandal, Brit...

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s political future could be over -- largely because of how he handled the newly unearthed racist yearbook photo that sparked controversy across the country, Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume said Monday night. I don’t think he can survive much longer,” Hume told Bret Baier on Fox News’ “Special Report.” Last Wednesday, Northam was blasted for controversial abortion comments he made during a radio interview. Two days later, news outlets reported that a racist photo appeared on Northam’s medical school yearbook page. Hume said the Democrats want him out to cover up liberal xenophobia, because if Northam remains, “that will deprive them ... of charging racism against Republicans which they used effectively, if unfairly lately.” Northam faces a torrent of pressure from both Democrats and Republicans to resign, after the now-infamous yearbook photo surfaced showing someone in blackface and someone in a KKK costume on Northam’s 1984 medical school yearbook page. He added that he didn’t think Northam was a racist, nor did the people of Virginia. Observing most in his party have bailed on him, he added: “It’s hard to see somebody sticking around in that circumstance for very long.” Fox News' Bret Baier and The Associated Press contributed to this report. The Malaysia Scandal Is Starting to Look Dire for Goldman Sachs

Just before Christmas, Malaysian authorities filed criminal charges against Goldman, seeking a stunning $7.5 billion in reparations for the bank’s role in the scandal. At year’s end, Goldman is known to be under investigation in the U.S., Singapore and Malaysia, while 1MDB probes are ongoing in at least 10 countries. Blankfein does not recall any one-on-one meeting with Mr. Low, nor have we seen any record to suggest such a meeting occurred.” In December, outside analysts predicted the bank might need to set aside $1 billion or more for penalties. The scandal showed that all it takes is a corrupt official and a morally flexible bank office to generate billions in public losses. According to Wright and Hope’s book Billion Dollar Whale, for instance, Goldman’s Asia President, David Ryan, was suspicious of some of the deals in the third bond issue. What was in it for the bank? About $600 million in fees. Still, Goldman charged Malaysia what by all accounts was a beyond-exorbitant price. The Billion Dollar Whale authors asserted the bank earned “two hundred times the typical fee.” Clare Brown of the Sarawak Report, who broke many of the early stories about 1MDB, was writing about Goldman’s pricing a long time ago. Goldman has survived many scandals in recent years.

Guyon Espiner: Politics wasn’t all scandal and leaks this year

Ministers were ill-prepared for government or ill-suited to it. She has managed a coalition with the Greens and New Zealand First. But the biggest challenge for Labour? The same challenge it always has: tax. National has had significant challenges this year. The Greens looked swamped by New Zealand First at times but can also be happy with 2018. It wasn't a big bang approach, more of a big ban approach. Well it's only in Parliament because National lets David Seymour win Epsom. In 2020 National lets Act wither. You'd be back to an FPP style, two party Parliament of National and Labour.

Inside how ‘The Front Runner’ starring Hugh Jackman captured the tabloid affair scandal that...

Jason Reitman knew exactly what was wrong with Matt Bai and Jay Carson's script the moment he held it in his hands. Starring Hugh Jackman as Hart, the movie (which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and will open in theaters November 21) is a fast-moving, fast-talking look inside Hart's campaign for president, which starts with him being the favorite to the White House and three weeks later comes to a screeching halt when, in April of 1987, The Miami Herald runs a story from an anonymous source that Hart is having an affair. The movie's look at how the reporters got the story, and how Hart dealt with the backlash, is a fascinating moment in politics as it was new for everyone. "It's like writing non-fiction but much harder in the sense that you're importing a lot of information without wanting anyone to feel you're talking at them," Bai said. Often Reitman, Bai, and Carson would sit in a room and just talk about campaign life. At some point Reitman would love something that came up in the conversation and write a line of dialogue on a white board. "In the movie, there's a conversation about where to get beer before the stores close, but there's another about who is going to Miami, and they both are going on at the same time," Reitman said. "Everyone talks over each other, we tried to make it feel like that. But what does Gary Hart think about his past coming back to the fore 31 years later? And Lee was like, 'Yes, that's exactly how you talk.'

Drugs scandal roils Greek politics

Komninos is not one of the 10 senior politicians under investigation, but his name does appear in one of the anonymous testimonies — obtained by POLITICO — where he is accused of accepting a bribe from Novartis in the form of “bundles of cash wrapped in orange tapes.” In an interview, he denied the allegation and said he worked to lower drug prices while in office. The testimonies, which were given under oath, contain several other similar tales of government officials receiving bribes in the form of bundles of cash. Novartis declined to comment on the allegations made in the anonymous Greek testimonies and the FBI report. We believe this is highly inappropriate and will defend our people and company against these claims.” The FBI declined to comment on its report and referred questions to the U.S. Embassy in Athens, which also declined to comment. Countersuits Maria Spyraki, a member of the European Parliament and spokesperson for the opposition New Democracy party, said that nothing in the documents released by Greek investigators so far provides hard evidence of any wrongdoing by senior politicians in Greece. “But the witnesses are not enough.” She added that the Greek parliament committee investigating Novartis had found no specific evidence incriminating any public official in Greece. In January, New Democracy also filed official questions to the minister of justice, Stavros Kontonis, asking him to explain how he plans to shelter the Greek judiciary from political influence amid allegations that those who have been accused are personalities that the ruling Syriza party would like to see tarnished. Stefanos Komninos, the former secretary-general of the ministry of economy, shipping and competitiveness, is accused in one witness statement of having kept the price of a box Galvus, a type 2 diabetes drug, at €300 instead of €150. A spokesperson for Touloupaki told POLITICO that her office is still conducting preliminary investigations into allegations that Novartis bribed public officials in Greece. Touloupaki’s office is also collaborating with anti-laundering officials in several EU countries to gather evidence of bribes being laundered out of the country, the two officials in Touloupaki’s office said.
