Women dominate congressional primaries – now to win office

Women take over ballots First they marched, now they’re running. Female candidates dominated in the first multi-state Democratic congressional primaries of the 2018 midterms. Out of 20 open primaries with women on the ballot on Tuesday night, voters selected a female nominee in 17 of them. Emily’s List, a women’s candidacy advocacy group reported a more than 20-fold increase in inquiries from women interested in running after Trump’s election. A number of women also stood for Republican nominations on Tuesday but they did not fare as well as Democratic women, winning less than half the seats they competed for. House races aren’t the only places women are making huge imprints on the ballot. Haspel hearing harangued The Senate confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee, Gina Haspel, was interrupted multiple times by demonstrators upset about her connection to the torture of foreign detainees. Another group of Code Pink activists were removed before the proceedings began, and several were dragged out by authorities as they yelled about torture. One of the protesters removed from the chamber was Ray McGovern, a former CIA operative turned activist who has been highly visible in criticizing the agency, especially on torture, since the mid 1990s. An exile in Brooklyn these days, after several years in the UK following her ousting from Iran in 2009, Alinejad is a face of the resistance on both sides of the ocean.

‘Just win, baby’: Nancy Pelosi tells Democrats it’s OK to run against her

Nancy Pelosi has a simple message for Democrats running for Congress this fall: “Just win, baby.” The House minority leader said Democrats running in conservative House districts across the country should do what they must to win – including running against her. Sign up for the Guardian's US daily email Read more “I think if they have to do that to win the election, I’m all for winning,” Pelosi said in an interview with Politico Playbook on Tuesday. “I think many of them are saying we need new leadership. Republicans seized on her comments that corporate bonuses of $1,000 paid to workers from the $1.5tn GOP tax plan amounted to “crumbs” and have hammered Democratic candidates by accusing them of being Pelosi acolytes. But the poll also found just 17% of voters say a candidate’s views on the Democratic leader will be “extremely important” in their vote. In a recent Pennsylvania special election, Republican organizations spent millions of dollars on TV advertising and campaign material tying Democrat Conor Lamb to the House minority leader, derisively attacking him as “Pelosi’s little Lamb”. Like in Pennsylvania, Republicans cast the Democrat, Hiral Tipirneni, as Pelosi-style liberal. In my district, it’s a very popular issue. But it takes attention away from the connection we need to make to people about their economic security.” Pelosi said she had planned to step aside as leader after Hillary Clinton won the election. “That became very important to me, that there would be a woman at the table where these decisions are negotiated,” she said.

News publishers see subscription dollars in local politics

Who says politics doesn’t pay? Those looking for ways to drum up consumer revenue might look at several news publishers’ efforts to build subscription products around politics. Since it first launched local state coverage in 2014, Politico Pro has expanded its head count there from 20 staffers to almost 50; this past August, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution launched Politically Georgia, a subscription newsletter and paywalled content offering focused on state elections, local economic news, health care and immigration, plus content licensed from PolitiFact and a legislation tracking tool that follows bills through Georgia’s state congress. These join more long-standing efforts, including The Texas Tribune’s The Blast newsletter, which launched in 2016, and NC Insider, a newsletter run by the McClatchy-owned News & Observer. By aiming squarely at lobbyists and local business leaders, these products deliver a loyal audience that’s willing to spend big bucks for a product of sufficient quality. “They need to understand that what’s driving purchase is really different.” Politically Georgia stands out from this pack for charging a consumer-friendly price, while most other products’ prices are much higher. Subscriptions to NC Insider start at $1,169 per year, with additional subscriptions running $399 per person. NC Insider, for example, still gets most of its subscribers by reaching out directly to local lobbyists, businesses, law firms and politicians. “We treat this more like a trade product.” For that reason, along with smaller reader totals, advertising is typically not a major ingredient in these products. Politico has not added new state-level Pro coverage since 2015.

Week In Politics: How Trump Announces Policy Changes And The Future Of The EPA

NPR's Audie Cornish speaks with Vox co-founder and editor Matthew Yglesias and Politico reporter Eliana Johnson about embattled Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and the fear of a "blue wave" in Wisconsin. Now let's talk about some of the ways President Trump is changing policy and Washington. YGLESIAS: Well, you know, I think you see on some of these issues that I think what the president is doing is using public statements to force members of his administration to start working on things that they've been trying to slow-walk. CORNISH: Eliana, for you? But this is a case where everybody around the president is telling him that it's time for Scott Pruitt to go, and the president is resisting. CORNISH: Getting out of Washington for a bit, there was an election in Wisconsin this week where the Democratic-backed candidate won a seat on Wisconsin's Supreme Court. But the results garnered a high-profile response in this case from Wisconsin's Republican governor, Scott Walker. YGLESIAS: I mean, you know, this is yet another race in a swing state this time where you see, you know, Democrats just doing really well in down-ballot races. And feelings about the president have driven a lot more interest among Democrats in these kinds of races that were falling below the radar. CORNISH: Eliana Johnson is national political reporter for Politico, Matt Yglesias of Vox.

Tillerson, Kelly internally complain about Kushner encroachments: report

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and White House chief of staff John Kelly have voiced frustration about Jared Kushner's encroachment on Tillerson's position, according to a report from Politico. Tillerson is reportedly frustrated with Kushner's involvement in foreign affairs, which are usually handled by the nation's diplomatic corps. Kushner, however, has been responsible for Israeli-Palestinian relations, as well as U.S. relations with Mexico and China. “We can’t have four secretaries of state,” Tillerson said. Politico also reports that Kelly has repeated Tillerson's complaints, which reportedly have not been taken well by Kushner. "We need a secretary of state who is supportive of the president," Kushner told Kelly, according to Politico. Kelly is in the process of grappling with the issue of Kushner's security clearance in the White House. Trump said on Friday that Kelly would have the final say on Kushner's security clearance. “I will let Gen. Kelly make that decision,” Trump said at a news conference. “And he's going to do what's right for the country.

Trump urging Hatch to run again in Utah to block Romney from Senate: report

President Trump has personally urged Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to run for reelection in Utah, in what some observers suspect is an attempt to block former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney from taking the seven-term senator's seat, Politico reported on Sunday. Trump has reportedly persuaded Hatch to seek another term during Hatch's visits to the White House and over phone calls. Politico first reported last month that Romney is mulling a potential 2018 Senate bid. Romney has been a vocal critic of Trump both before and after Trump's presidential campaign. The former Massachusetts governor ripped the president in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., in August, after Trump said that "many sides" had taken part in the violence. Romney said Trump's response "caused racists to rejoice" and "minorities to weep." The Politico story comes after The Washington Examiner reported on Sunday that Trump's former chief White House strategist Stephen Bannon was considering endorsing Hatch as a means of blocking Romney. “If Steve had a choice between Orrin Hatch and Mitt Romney, he would pick Hatch 10 times out of 10,” a source told The Examiner. The report comes one day before Trump is set to travel to the state with Hatch to announce that he is shrinking at least two national monuments. Hatch was the second senator after Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) to endorse Trump during the 2016 campaign.
