Elizabeth Warren got her first retweet from Ted Cruz following Facebook ad removal

Sens. However, the Texas Republican came to the support of his liberal Massachusetts colleague after Facebook briefly took down several of her Democratic presidential campaign ads promoting her new plan to break up “Big Tech.” The ads — which were restored shortly after Politico reported on their removal Monday night — argued that big companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon should be split apart “so they don’t have so much power over everyone else.” Additionally, Warren tweeted Monday night that Facebook’s removal of the paid posts proved her point about the social media company’s platform. Let’s start with their ability to shut down a debate over whether FB has too much power,” she wrote. In a retweet of Warren’s post Tuesday afternoon, Cruz said he agrees and called the power of tech giants “a serious threat to our democracy. “They shouldn’t be censoring Warren, or anybody else.” First time I’ve ever retweeted @ewarren But she’s right—Big Tech has way too much power to silence Free Speech. https://t.co/VoesOKSqhA — Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) March 12, 2019 Despite the two senators’ suggestions, there’s been no credible evidence that Facebook censors speech based on political viewpoints. Cruz has also been skeptical about the concentrated tech power, albeit often for different reasons. The Texas senator and other Republicans have raised suspicions about Facebook and other tech platforms suppressing conservative views. “Facebook and the tech industry are located in the Silicon Valley, which is an extremely left-leaning place,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Cruz during a hearing last April. “This is actually a concern that I have and I try to root out in the company … making sure that we don’t have any bias in the work that we do.” Zuckerberg said that while Facebook has certain standards and does remove broadly objectionably content like hate speech, terrorist propaganda, or nudity, the company does not censor political speech.

Political Cornflakes: Take a look at the winners and losers in President Trump’s budget

[Politico] -> A bill dubbed “Lauren’s Law” in honor of murdered University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey failed in committee Monday. [Trib] [DNews] [Fox13] [ABC4] [KSL] -> President Donald Trump’s budget would cut the Interior Department’s spending by 14 percent, speed up oil and gas exploration and slash money to preserve new land. Democrats say the bill is dead on arrival. [Trib] -> Tensions are rippling throughout the Utah House and Senate over what will become of the tax reform proposal that disintegrated last week. [Trib] -> The Senate Transportation Committee voted to hold a bill that would have Utah following in the footsteps of 19 other states by only requiring cars to have one license plate rather than two. [Trib] -> The Tribune obtained an email from the Salt Lake Chamber inviting a rail company to come to Utah to sit on a committee made up of a multitude of businesses to discuss the inland port project. [Trib] -> A Senate committee passed along a bill that would create a commission to review the state flag and potentially recommend alternative designs. The legislation will go before the Senate next. Week In Politics: The BuzzFeed Report, Trump And Pelosi And A 2nd Summit With...

NPR's Mary Louise Kelly speaks with Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post and Politico reporter Eliana Johnson about a report from BuzzFeed News that Trump directed Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, the feud between President Trump and Speaker Pelosi, and the second summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un. So let's hop right in with Eliana Johnson of Politico and Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post. TUMULTY: If it turns out to be true, it's a very, very big deal. I mean, NPR - again, we should state - has not confirmed the BuzzFeed reporting. JOHNSON: I agree with Karen that if this is true, I think it is the worst thing for the president's prospects of staying in office that has come out yet. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi already under pressure from her caucus to impeach the president. Democrats support Pelosi, Republicans support Trump. Interestingly enough, one of the big things he discussed in that 1801 State of the Union letter was the question of immigration, of citizenship. We really haven't seen any movement toward denuclearization from North Korea, so you wouldn't really expect the president to schedule a follow-up. That's Eliana Johnson, national political reporter for Politico, and Karen Tumulty, political columnist for The Washington Post.

Flashback Friday in Politics: Trade Wars, Manafort, Immigration Dominate Minds

Welcome to a weekend of tariff talk. Before you get ready to go out—or stay in—let's review the top political stories from today. Trump Wasn't Kidding Trump announced on Friday, June 15, that he was slapping $50 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese imports. In case you're worried about a trade war, Brian Sozzi, executive editor of TheStreet, talked to top executives about what a trade war could mean. This could be the start of a trade war with China. Politico reported that Paul Ryan and other GOP members had described Trump as "excited" for the bill, but we guess that's not the case. I can't take away his cellphone," said Judge Amy Berman Jackson, a federal judge, about Paul Manafort on Friday. The judge said that she had no choice but to jail Manafort after evidence of witness tampering was revealed by Robert Mueller's team. President Trump apparently felt bad for Manafort and said at an impromptu news conference on Friday, Mueller's team "went back 12 years to get things that he did 12 years ago." The special counsel has charged Manafort with a 12-count indictment.
