Deadly ‘Stand Your Ground’ shooting focus of local and national politics

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) - The deadly Clearwater 'Stand Your Ground' shooting case is making waves in Washington D.C. Last Saturday, Markeis McGlockton was laid to rest. Drejka claimed it was self defense. As family and friends said good bye, the debate over the controversial law lives on. The outcry for justice has been heard in the nation's capital. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Reps. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.) and Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), are calling on the Department of Justice to investigate. "When you look at that video, obviously he is backing away and the question is, is there more to it than just what meets our eye on a video," said Nelson. Drejka was not arrested and the case has been turned over to the State Attorney's Office. Nelson is not commenting on the state's law. Governor Rick Scott is running against Nelson for his seat. In a statement from Scott's office: "The Governor expects that every Florida law be enforced and applied fairly by law enforcement and state attorneys, who are elected by Floridians.

Talking About Sexism Is Not a “Victim Trap” for Female Politicians

In his most recent piece for New York magazine, columnist Jonathan Chait argues that Sens. But Chait brings one new claim to the mix: that female victimhood is a particular currency on the political left that could make a candidate popular among progressives, even as it makes her appear unpresidential to everyone else. Chait assigns similar blame to Gillibrand for a recent GQ profile that touched on her fight against sexual harassment in Congress. Chait writes that “much of the story” hews to the theme of sexual harassment, including Gillibrand’s own experiences as a target of such harassment. But less than a quarter of the GQ piece actually relates to Gillibrand and harassment, and much of it focuses on her moves to hold Sen. Al Franken accountable for his alleged sexual harassment and her legislative efforts to reform sexual harassment and assault policy. Chait argues that discussing a woman in relation to harassment—as a person men do things to—strips her of agency, making it hard to envision her as a possible president. These statements serve a dual purpose: to convince working-class voters that politicians understand their struggles, and to position the candidates as people who overcame obstacles to achieve success. To the extent that Gillibrand and Harris actually talk about getting interrupted and sexually harassed on the job, it’s not to complain or seek pity. Nevertheless, she persisted,” McConnell said. It’s there in the stories of Gillibrand and Harris too.

Facebook fiasco: Feinstein focuses on politics, Kamala Harris on users

(Photo by Mark Wilson/Getty Images) California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris highlighted very different worries Tuesday when they had their chance to question Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in a televised Senate hearing that ran for nearly five hours. For Feinstein, the “alarming” Russian intrusion into the 2016 presidential campaign was her top concern. She added that she had previously asked Zuckerberg “several critical questions for which you don’t have answers,” including why Facebook hadn’t alerted users that their data had fallen into the hands of the Cambridge Analytica political consulting firm when the platform discovered it in 2015. “Knowing what we know now, we should have handled a lot of things here differently,” Zuckerberg said, stating what was the theme of his long afternoon under the TV lights. she asked Zuckerberg. The company didn’t even identify the problem until “around the time of the 2016 election itself,” he said. “They’re going to get better at this, and we have to get better, too.” Harris took a much sharper tone with Zuckerberg, accusing him of avoiding answers to many of the questions senators were asking. Was there a discussion in 2015 “about whether or not the users should be informed?” Harris asked. “And we did that based on false information that we thought that the case was closed and the data had been deleted.” Harris also asked how much money Facebook had made from the fake Russian campaign ads, repeating a question she had asked executives from Facebook, Google and Twitter in November.

Kamala Harris went on ‘Ellen’ and proved why presidential politics is the absolute worst

"These are immediate needs," Harris said. Harris is far from alone in twisting herself into a pretzel to avoid looking as though she might potentially be interested in running for president in two years' time. The problem here is the way we, the political/media establishment, treat politicians: Like robots, not people. Do you think you are an overly ambitious ladder-climber if you think about what other jobs you might be interested in doing down the line? Seen through that lens, Harris would be absolutely crazy not to have given any thought to whether she might run for president in 2020. You can debate whether she can win -- or even whether she should run -- but I find it very hard to believe that we should abide by a system that punishes a politician for thinking about being, um, a politician. The idea that politicians aren't like the rest of us creates these sorts of unreasonable expectations as to how they should handle questions about their future ambitions. The idea that this is all a zero-sum game, that Harris acknowledging some interest in 2020 somehow means she is paying less attention to the here and now is, in a word, dumb. Politicians can do two things at once! Politicians, they're just like us!

Kamala Harris positions herself for White House run

Sen. Kamala Harris is increasingly positioning herself for a what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary for the White House in 2020. The former California attorney general, who is just at the beginning of her second year in the Senate, is taking positions that could endear herself with the Democratic base while allowing her to stand out from a group of Democrats who might seek the progressive mantle. Harris voted against a Senate immigration bill backed by centrists from both parties earlier this month, waiting until the last minute to break with other liberals such as Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass. ), who both backed the measure. “While this bill would put Dreamers on a pathway toward citizenship, the appropriation of $25 billion for a border wall is a waste of taxpayer money,” she said. “I am not going to be silenced by attacks from the NRA or anyone else,” she wrote on Twitter, minutes after NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre labeled Harris and other Democrats “new European-style socialists bearing down upon us.” Last week, after the nation began another discussion on gun control following the Feb. 14 shooting at a Florida high school, Harris immediately weighed in on MSNBC. “We cannot tolerate a society and live in a country with any level of pride when our babies are being slaughtered,” she said in a video that quickly went viral. Chris Lehane, a Democratic strategist who is based in California, said Harris “feels a responsibility and an obligation to stand up on issues she has long been involved with.” “It’s a natural position for any progressive Democrat from California because they have a record to point to of having engaged on those issues,” Lehane said. “She’s looking to be a champion of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party,” said Jack Pitney, a professor of politics at Claremont McKenna College in California, saying that Harris “has a chance at getting a lot of support.” “It’s a position that’s not going to hurt her in the state of California and it will endear her to Democratic progressives who are looking for an assertive stance against the NRA,” Pitney added of her comments on guns.
