Palmetto Politics: Some South Carolina governors passed hurricane tests, others stumbled

Palmetto Politics: Some South Carolina governors passed hurricane tests, others stumbled. With Hurricane Irma on a shifting path toward South Carolina, Gov. His predecessors have seen a wide variety of odd moments in their hurricane efforts. Here are a few highlights from the past: Days after Hurricane Hugo struck in September 1989, President George H.W. “We didn’t make a personal visit to my home," Holling insisted in the aftermath. Democratic Gov. Anyone running against Benjamin would have needed deep pockets. He has gathered fellow mayors in Richland and Lexington counties for meetings, and the Columbia City and Richland County councils will hold their first joint meeting in years Sept. 19. Summer Nuclear Station expansion give the House and Senate committees examining the $9 billion debacle plenty of fodder. "We will meet as long as it takes to the right results," said Rep. Peter McCoy, a Charleston Republican chairing the House Utility Ratepayer Protection Committee.

CBS Lies Through Their Teeth About Cuba’s Hurricane Irma Preparedness

CBS Lies Through Their Teeth About Cuba’s Hurricane Irma Preparedness. “Cuba normally gears up quickly for storms with constant advisories on TV and radio urging people to prepare. Alarmed by the forecasts at mid-week, these U.S.-based friends called their Cuba-based relatives to ask about their preparations for the hurricane… “What hurricane?” came the responses from Cuba. They hadn’t heard a thing about the looming catastrophe! Two months after enabling Matthews' visit to Castro, the same Castro agents planted in New York contacted CBS, who quickly dispatched their ace anchorman, Robert Taber, and a camera crew to Castro's camp in Cuba's Sierra Maestra Mountains. Regarding Castro's heart-warming and eye-misting plans for Cuba--nary a rebuttal was to be heard on this blockbuster CBS "investigative report." This time the already sainted Edward Murrow interviewed Fidel Castro on his CBS show "See it Now" from Havana. An (uncharacteristically) smiling Murrow tells Fidel’s son as the “interview” commences. For the record, Castro had no "home" to speak of at the time. Every night during the week that Murrow interviewed him, Fidel, Raul and Che repaired to their respective stolen mansions and met with Soviet GRU agents to button down the Stalinization of Cuba.

Look in the Mirror Hillary

In the book, the former First Lady and Secretary of State blames a variety of culprits for her upset defeat. With almost four decades of political experience and a husband who served as president, Clinton should have easily defeated the maverick businessman. In addition, Clinton was supported by almost all of the national news media. What happened to Hillary? She also told a variety of lies about the email scandal and had very little credibility on the issue. Lauer was actually doing a respectable job as a reporter digging for the truth and probing the insincere Hillary for answers. Ironically, if Clinton would have taken Biden's advice she may have won the Rust Belt states on Election Day and been elected president of the United States. Not surprisingly, Clinton also blasts former President Obama, her 2008 opponent for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. However, without the unfair help of the Democratic National Committee, Clinton may have actually lost the nomination to the Vermont socialist. She does not spare her opponent, Donald Trump, who she likened to a “creep” because he loomed over her during the second presidential debate.

White House communications aide hires lawyer amid Russia probe: report

White House communications aide hires lawyer amid Russia probe: report. Interim White House communications director Hope Hicks has retained a personal lawyer amid the ongoing Russia investigation, Politico reports. Hicks has hired Robert Trout of the Trout Cacheris & Janis law firm, sources told the newspaper. Trout previously served at the Justice Department and as a former assistant U.S. attorney in Baltimore. The reported hire comes as special counsel Robert Mueller looks to question White House staff as part of the federal investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. The Daily Beast reported Friday on effort to organize a legal defense fund for White House staffers to help cover legal bills associated with the special counsel probe. Mueller has expressed interest in interviewing six current and former White House aides, including Hicks, The Washington Post reported Friday. Mueller reportedly also has his sights set on former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and former chief of staff Reince Priebus, among others. The report indicates that Mueller is seeking to interview more individuals closer to the president. Politico reported Friday that no request has been made to interview the president himself.

The Swamp Is Incoherent on the Rule of Law, Thanks to Pharma

The Swamp Is Incoherent on the Rule of Law, Thanks to Pharma. Recently, it has become clear that one of the biggest of those blind spots is the federal government’s treatment of the pharmaceutical industry. This can be most clearly seen in the troubling continuity between the favored policy of pharma-friendly elements within the Trump administration, and the Obama administration’s own weakness on a critical policy in the battle over drug prices: namely, the 340B drug pricing program. If they want an ability to sell drugs, price negotiation free, to the giant pot of money that is the Medicaid and Medicare Part B markets, then they have to also sell drugs at lower prices to a specific subset of hospitals that serve a disproportionate share of vulnerable populations, classified as “safety net hospitals.” To any executive, this should be both a financial and political no-brainer. Politically, engaging in such voluntary price slashing behavior can engender good will from a grateful public. View Cartoon However, despite all this, in recent years, this policy has long been in the crosshairs of the pharmaceutical industry. Never mind that cancer drugs are already among the most expensive, and thus the most profitable, drugs on the market. Nevertheless, in a show of politically senseless greed, pharma has done everything in its power to either weaken or end 340B altogether. Witness the fact that President Obama only permitted a policy fining companies that overcharged 340B hospitals and clinics to enter the books eight days before he left office. One presumes that Obama didn’t act sooner because he knew that his chosen successor, Hillary Clinton, needed all the pharma donations she could get.
