2017: The Beginning of the American Turn Around

If you were to ask me in 2016 what 2017 would be like, I’m not certain that I could have provided a clear and concise answer. Voters overwhelmingly rejected Hillary Clinton in the places that it mattered most and in an upset that surprised the political class, she lost in places that were previously solidly Democratic. Our nation has never seen vitriol at this level with any president before Trump, but despite it, Trump has continued to move forward with his agenda of ‘Making America Great Again.’ Immigration However, things were rocky for the president. Think about it, when taxes go down for American corporations, the American economy reaps direct benefits. The net result will be positive because having the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world has hurt the economy and slowed job growth. As a growing small business owner, we can tell you first hand that small businesses are over-regulated. Trade American goods are now worth more today than they were a year ago. With the opening of NAFTA, we’re able to make better deals that will benefit American companies and workers. Conclusion Despite the negative feedback of his detractors, President Trump has delivered on many of his promises and the net results have been overwhelmingly positive for the American people. Could he improve in several areas?

This Nobel Laureate Is Worried U.S. Politics Could Endanger Scientific Research

(STOCKHOLM) — An American researcher who shared this year’s Nobel Prize for medicine bluntly criticized political developments at home in his address at the awards’ gala banquet Sunday night. Michael Rosbash, who was honored for his work on circadian rhythms — commonly called the body clock — expressed concern that U.S. government support such as that received by him and colleagues Jeffrey Hall and Michael Young is endangered. “We benefited from an enlightened period in the postwar United States. Our National Institutes of Health have enthusiastically and generously supported basic research … (but) the current climate in the U.S. is a warning that continued support cannot be taken for granted,” he said in a short speech at the ornate city hall in Stockholm. The 2018 federal budget proposed by President Donald Trump calls for cutting science funding by billions of dollars. “Also in danger is the pluralistic America into which all three of us of born were born and raised after World War II,” Rosbash said. Thurlow said the Hiroshima blast left her buried under the rubble, but she was able to see light and crawl to safety. In the same way, the campaign to which she belongs is a driving force behind an international treaty to ban nuclear weapons, she said after ICAN received the Nobel prize it won in October. “Our light now is the ban treaty,” Thurlow said. ICAN Executive Director Beatrice Fihn, who accepted the prize along with Thurlow, said that while the treaty is far from ratification “now, at long last, we have an unequivocal norm against nuclear weapons.” “This is the way forward.

Jordanian official warns US of ‘dangerous consequences’ if Jerusalem named Israel’s capital

The foreign minister of Jordan on Sunday evening said he spoke with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson about "dangerous consequences" if the U.S. decides to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. "Spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Tillerson on dangerous consequences of recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Such a decision would trigger anger across [Arab and Muslim] worlds, fuel tension [and] jeopardize peace efforts," Ayman Safadi tweeted. The Jordanian official's tweet came after The Associated Press reported that President Trump is considering naming the holy city as Israel's new capital. Trump's announcement is expected sometime this week, according to the AP. Observers fear such a decision could spark anger across the region and put American lives there in danger. Both Palestinians and Israelis claim Jerusalem as their capital, though the international community doesn't recognize Israel's claim on the entire city. Safadi's tweet came the same day Jared Kushner, Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, said during a Brookings Institution event that the president has yet to decide whether he will move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, another hot-button issue. However, the AP's report suggests that Trump will delay moving the embassy to Jerusalem, a key promise during his presidential campaign.
