Bishop of Spokane says pro-choice politicians should not be allowed to receive communion

Video SPOKANE, Wash. - The leader of Spokane's catholic church is speaking out against recent policy changes which expand access to abortion. Bishop Thomas Daly sent a letter to the Diocese of Spokane Friday, in which he reacts to a law recently passed in New York. The Reproductive Health Act, signed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Jan. 22, allows abortions after the 24th week of pregnancy if there is "an absence of fetal viability, or the abortion is necessary to protect the patient's life or health." In the letter, Daly calls the new law 'evil,' and condemns Cuomo for supporting it despite his previously publicized Catholic faith. Daly goes on to say any Catholic politicians who support access to abortion are "scandalous," and should not be allowed to receive communion unless they are "reconciled to Christ and the Church." The Church’s commitment to the life of every human person from conception until death is firm. God alone is the author of life and for the civil government to sanction the willful murder of children is unacceptable. Daly is not the only Catholic leader denouncing politicians who support pro-choice legislation. Get your weather forecast from people that actually live in your community. It’s time for a new day in politics

I have repeatedly invited my opponent to stand with me before the voters and debate. In fact, he has never debated anyone in his 15 years holding office. Consistently, the top concerns many people voice to me are homelessness, affordable housing, mental health, quality jobs and crime in our area. I’ve talked to many young people, who are excited to start their careers and their families in Spokane. We should be mindful that increasing taxes, like through – such as a mileage tax, carbon tax or income tax – might increase people’s cost of living and decrease economic growth so that they aren’t able to build the lives they want in Spokane, or Washington state. I will fight tax increases which will adversely impact our community, and I will champion the needs of Spokane, always working for economic development and a safer community for everyone. At this critical time in our growth, our community needs real leadership, rather than people who put party before those they’re are supposed to represent. As a retired Marine Corps combat leader, I have the experience, passion and work ethic to represent our community well. It is time for a new day in politics. I will be honored to represent you and will always be available and ready to work with you at any time to solve the problems facing our community, ensuring that everyone is heard and well-represented.
