Letter: Scripture use in politics can be dangerous

We have to pay attention to how scripture is being used to defend actions, and especially when these actions are hurting people. Since last Thursday, I am pleased to see that many have voiced their concerns over how Attorney General Jeff Sessions used scripture from the New Testament in the Christian Bible to defend taking children away from their parents who were seeking asylum at our southern U.S. border. Sessions referred to the Apostle Paul's words in chapter 13 of Romans. This is where Paul talks about that we should be subject to the governing authorities and that they are instituted by God. Now read chapter 13, verses 8-10. Paul talks of loving your neighbor as yourself and that love does no wrong to a neighbor and is the fulfilling of the law. Next, read chapter 12 of Romans, where Paul discusses new life in Christ and marks of a true Christian, with the last verse in chapter 12 concluding by saying: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Somehow, I think Paul would remember the decision Mary and Joseph had to make when Jesus was a 2-year-old to protect him and save his life. In Romans 13:9, Paul says: "The commandments.... ; and any other commandment are summed up in this word: Love your neighbor as yourself." Julie Tillberg Mayville, N.D.
