We have to pay attention to how scripture is being used to defend actions, and especially when these actions are hurting people. Since last Thursday, I am pleased to see that many have voiced their concerns over how Attorney General Jeff Sessions used scripture from the New Testament in the Christian Bible to defend taking children away from their parents who were seeking asylum at our southern U.S. border.
Sessions referred to the Apostle Paul’s words in chapter 13 of Romans. If you have a Christian Bible (or online access), look up Romans 13:1-7. This is where Paul talks about that we should be subject to the governing authorities and that they are instituted by God.
