I was hopeful it was just grandstanding, but this part of the ruling made me feel more optimistic than I have in a while: [T]he Special Counsel’s investigation of defendant falls squarely within the jurisdiction outlined in [paragraph b(i)] of the May 17 Appointment Order, and because [paragraph b(i)] was an appropriate grant of authority, there is no basis for dismissal of the Superseding Indictment on this ground. Paragraph b(i) of the order reads: [A]ny links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump[.] Compare with paragraph b(ii) of the order, which reads: [A]ny matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation[.] So, Judge Ellis is saying that Manafort's indictment in his court is directly related to links between Russia and Trump's campaign, and IS NOT a matter that arose directly from that investigation.
