May-Merkel meeting ends abruptly after May breaks out ‘two world wars and one world...

A tense meeting between British Prime Minister Theresa May and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has ended abruptly after a frustrated May broke out a ‘two world wars and one world cup’ chant. The leaders were due to discuss Britain’s impending exit from the EU as well as future German investment in Britain. However, the meeting got off to an acrimonious start when May mentioned Germany’s exit from the 2018 World Cup. ‘Britain could certainly use some German advice on a quick and easy exit strategy,’ May is reported to have said. With May under increasing pressure – from both internal and external sources – some believe she might just have snapped completely when she busted out the ‘two world wars and one world cup’ chant. ‘The meeting was not going well and tensions were rising. I never expected Mrs May to jump on the table and start chanting like she was at a football match though,’ said one attending staffer. Since news of the meeting broke on BBC, Theresa May’s popularity has skyrocketed to an all-time high. There are now rumblings she intends to hold a snap election in a month’s time.

Donald Trump schedules meeting with Yorkshire dictator over nuclear disarmament

The White House has revealed that President Donald Trump has scheduled a meeting with the dictator of Yorkshire to discuss possible nuclear disarmament. The meeting will take place whilst Trump is on his state visit to Britain. The relationship between the USA and Yorkshire has often times been tumultuous, although it has shown signs of improvement since the end of Barack Obama’s presidency. ‘A black Muslim in the White House? It beggars belief,’ said either Trump or a Yorkshireman. This would be the first time a US President – or anyone from outside of Yorkshire – was allowed into the area since a Londoner tried to bring quinoa to the White Rose County and was promptly shot. Yorkshire is been ruled by Geoffrey Gam-Mon, a man who is a proponent of both nuclear armament and not paying more than one pound for anything. While Yorkshire has been on the verge of nuclear war with anyone who wants some, Trump is hoping cooler heads will prevail. ‘Unless he mocks my tiny hands. Then it’ll be an all-out war,’ said the president.

President Trump’s June 12 Summit With Kim Jong Un Is Back On After Meeting...

One week after abruptly canceling a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, President Donald Trump announced the June 12 summit is back on. But he tamped down expectations that one meeting will be enough to solve all the problems between the two nations. “I think we’re over that, totally over that, and now we’re going to deal and we’re going to really start a process,” Trump told reporters Friday afternoon of the escalating rhetoric that led to the cancellation. “We’re meeting with the Chairman on June 12.” Trump predicted the upcoming meeting in Singapore would likely be the first of many. “Hey, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we walked out and everything was settled all of a sudden from sitting down for a couple of hours,” Trump said. “I don’t see that happening. But I see over a period of time.” Trump’s reversal came after more than an hour with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Jong Un’s top aide in the White House Friday. Kim Yong Chol delivered a personal letter to Trump from the North Korean leader. “I think they’re OK,” Trump said of relations between the two nations. “I think they’re good.”

Lawmakers request meeting with Amtrak CEO over funding for route

A bipartisan group of lawmakers on Thursday asked for a meeting with Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson over the company’s plans to deny funding for its Southwest Chief route pending additional financial investments. The letter, penned by multiple House and Senate lawmakers in both parties, argues the route that runs through Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico is “vital to the economic well-being of our communities.” “The lack of transparency by Amtrak management about its changing position on the Southwest Chief is troubling, particularly for a Government-Sponsored Enterprise entrusted with an important public transportation mission,” the letter reads. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) signed the document, as did a group of House lawmakers from New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas. Amtrak has put conditions on its decision to contribute funds to a project on the route. The letter comes in response to a message the company sent to Congress responding to questions about plans for the route. “Amtrak will offer a $3 million match towards the project costs if the grant application for the requested amount is successful,” Amtrak CFO William Feidt wrote in the October letter that was submitted with the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant application. “Before Amtrak will fulfill this contribution, a comprehensive financial plan and accompanying commitments by relevant states and BNSF for the remainder of the infrastructure investments and associated additional maintenances costs for this route in New Mexico must be completed,” Feidt added, referring to the BNSF Railway. Democratic lawmakers from New Mexico announced in March that Colfax County had received a $16 million TIGER grant for the project, aimed at rehabilitating the Southwest Chief line, which operates from Chicago, Ill., to Los Angeles, Calif. But Amtrak is insisting the other parties pitch in financially and develop a strategy for “long-term financial commitments” to rebuild the route operating from Hutchinson, Kan., and Albuquerque, N.M. “A piecemeal approach to solving this problem that leads to higher operating costs and new capital obligations for Amtrak’s long distance routes isn’t sustainable, especially as we face vast needs for fleet, station and infrastructure improvements across the National Network,” Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari said in a statement to The Hill. “We stand prepared to consider any such plan as we consider alternatives for this portion of the route.” Reps. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Jared Polis (D-Colo.), Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M), Steve Pearce (R-N.M.) and Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) also signed the Thursday letter, in which lawmakers say it’s “essential” that the funding be utilized to sustain “the Southwest Chief on its current route.”

South Carolina Republican puts loaded gun on table in constituent meeting

How the Parkland students took over Guardian US Read more One campaigner for gun reform who was present at the “coffee with constituents” meeting called US representative Ralph Norman’s actions “a far cry from what responsible gun ownership looks like”. According to local news reports, Norman placed the .38-caliber gun on a table and said: “I’m not going to be a Gabby Giffords.” He was referring to a former Democratic Arizona congresswoman who was shot outside a grocery store during a constituent gathering in 2011. Giffords’ husband, retired Nasa astronaut Mark Kelly, said in a statement that Norman was “no Gabby Giffords” and noted that his wife has dedicated her life to ending gun violence. “Americans are increasingly faced with a stark choice: leaders like Gabby, who work hard together to find solutions to problems, or extremists like the [National Rifle Association] and Congressman Norman, who rely on intimidation tactics and perpetuating fear,” Kelly said. Jeff Flake, a Republican Arizona senator, addressed Norman on Twitter. “I sincerely hope you never have to experience what my friend [Giffords] experienced,” he wrote. “But to suggest that she might have avoided being shot had she carried a weapon as she spoke to constituents that morning is inappropriate and inconsiderate.” Norman said he would display his gun again. “I’m tired of these liberals jumping on the guns themselves as if they are the cause of the problem,” he told the Post and Courier. Guns are not the problem Ralph Norman Lori Carter, a schoolteacher from Charlotte, North Carolina, said she thought Norman’s actions were contradictory because Norman did not know if someone at the meeting had mental health issues. Instead, I felt unsafe when he insisted on showing us his loaded gun and keeping it out on the table for much of our conversation.” Three Republican South Carolina state lawmakers, meanwhile, introduced a bill on Thursday that would allow the state legislature to debate secession from the US if the federal government confiscated legally purchased firearms in the state.

Daily Squat denies it photoshopped Jeremy Corbyn to look like he met Freddo Frog

After receiving thousands of complaints, Daily Squat launched an extensive investigation into whether or not the image was created or altered using Photoshop. The news website found itself ‘not guilty’ several seconds later. We also believe this was a matter of public interest that needed to be reported. Why did Mr Corbyn meet Freddo? Was it, as he claimed, to discuss a price freeze? Or was it, as others claim, to sell state secrets?’ said Jake Rhodes, the founder of Daily Squat. ‘They’re constantly mocking Jeremy for his love of jam and knitwear. The website features a lot of blue. I’m not going to say they’re Tory stooges, but something smells to me,’ said left-wing journalist Owen Jones. We were able to track down the man who works in the Daily Squat graphics department and he too denied that the image had been Photoshopped.

NRA official after meeting: Trump supports ‘strong due process’

A top official with the National Rifle Association's lobbying arm, the NRA-ILA, said Thursday following an Oval Office meeting with President Trump and Vice President Pence that the pair "don't want gun control." In a tweet, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris Cox also defended Trump as supporting "strong due process" a day after the president raised eyebrows among gun rights advocates with his call to "take the guns first, go through due process second." "I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. #NRA #MAGA — Chris Cox (@ChrisCoxNRA) March 1, 2018 Trump also acknowledged the meeting on Twitter, calling it a "good (great)" meeting but offering few details. Trump also accused Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) of being "afraid" of the NRA while attempting to tout his own independence from the organization. The NRA and its lobbying arm have faced massive criticism for their opposition to gun control in the days following last month's shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla. The confessed gunman, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, legally obtained the AR-15 rifle allegedly used in the attack that left 17 students and faculty dead and more than a dozen others wounded.

NRA on Trump meeting: Great TV, but ‘bad policy’

The National Rifle Association (NRA) on Wednesday issued a blistering statement criticizing a meeting held by President Trump and lawmakers to discuss gun proposals in the wake of a mass shooting at a Florida high school. During the bipartisan meeting, Trump said guns should be taken from dangerous individuals even if it violates due process rights and suggested lawmakers remove a concealed carry measure from a bipartisan background checks bill. The measure, which would allow concealed weapons to be carried over state lines, is a top NRA priority. “While today’s meeting made for great TV, the gun control proposals discussed would make for bad policy that would not keep our children safe,” NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said in a statement to The Hill. “Instead of punishing law-abiding gun owners for the acts of a deranged lunatic our leaders should pass meaningful reforms that would actually prevent future tragedies.” Baker said they can start by fixing the broken mental health system, strengthening background checks to ensure the records of people who are prohibited from possessing firearms are in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, securing our schools and preventing mentally ill individuals deemed dangerous from accessing firearms. In a separate longer statement, Baker said the NRA has always supported efforts to keep schools safe and firearms out of the hands of people who are dangerous to themselves and others. “Whether you love or hate firearms, we all want to send our children to safe schools and to live in safe communities," she said. But Baker argues it can be accomplished without "shifting the focus, blame or burden onto safe, law-abiding gun owners." “We will continue to support legislative efforts to make our schools and communities safe and oppose gun control schemes that cannot keep us safe and only punish law-abiding Americans.” A gunman killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14 in Parkland, Fla. The shooting has reignited a long-running debate over gun control in the U.S. and led to calls from students, activists and lawmakers, among others, for new legislation.
