I’m Beth Fukumoto, Democratic Candidate for Hawaii’s First Congressional (aka the ex-Republican you heard...

I was 27 when I first ran for office. I had just returned home from graduate school. I was living with my parents, trying to find a job and starting payments on huge student debt. The only place I could find work was the Legislature, where I saw establishment Democrats with super-majority control doing favors for friends instead of taking care of the needs of regular people. So, I decided I should run in the nearly non-existent Hawaii Republican Party in hopes of refocusing it on the needs of the people that were getting left behind. It didn't work. And, the whole country watched me lose that battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wNcWAb9n9c#action=share. I got into politics to fight powerful, special interests and make government work for everyday people. I'm sure this intro raises lots of questions … Ask me anything. And, visit www.bethfukumoto.com.

5 things for January 16: Shutdown, sibling captives, Simone Biles, Hawaii, Venezuela

Here's what else you need to know to Get Up to Speed and Out the Door. It's about to be some kind of week in Washington. The government's going to shut down Friday without a spending bill. But passage of that bill seems far less likely after last week's drama over immigration and DACA. Even the adults looked like children. More than 140 female athletes, including members of the gold medal-winning "Fierce Five" team from the 2012 London Games, have accused Nassar of abuse. Biles called out USA Gymnastics, saying it allowed Nassar to abuse girls for years. The alert created instant chaos Saturday morning in Hawaii, where residents and tourists had been told they'd have less than 20 minutes to find shelter if North Korea launched a missile attack. The Venezuelan police pilot accused of launching a shocking helicopter attack on the country's Supreme Court is dead. CNN has not been able to independently confirm Perez's death, but Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said an operation had been held to hunt down the "terrorist group that attacked the Supreme Court."

Hawaii rep: False alarm shows need for Trump to talk with North Korea

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) on Sunday highlighted the need for President Trump to hold talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after a false alarm about a missile attack sent the islands into a state of panic over the weekend. "I've been calling on President Trump to directly negotiate with North Korea, to sit across the table from Kim Jong Un, work out the differences so that we can build a pathway towards denuclearization, to remove this threat," Gabbard told host Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union." Her remarks come after an erroneous alert, sent to over a million cellphones across the state, directed people to seek shelter from an incoming ballistic missile threat. Gabbard stressed that this fear of an attack underscores the need for the two world leaders to meet and address the heightened tensions. "We have got to get to the underlying issue here of why are the people of Hawaii and this country facing a nuclear threat coming from North Korea today, and what is this president doing urgently to eliminate that threat?" She said Trump needs to drop his preconditions for attending the meeting, arguing that making Pyongyang give up its nuclear weapons program before coming to the negotiating table is "unrealistic." "They see it as the only deterrent against the U.S. coming in and overthrowing their regime there," she said. The false alert came after "an employee pushed the wrong button," Hawaii Gov. "It's not just the president making a decision to launch a nuclear weapon. It's these kinds of mistakes that we have seen happen in the past that bring us to this brink of nuclear war that could be unintentional," Gabbard told Tapper.

Hawaii tells Supreme Court it plans to challenge new travel ban

In a letter to the Supreme Court on Thursday, an attorney for the state of Hawaii said the state is planning to challenge President Trump’s new travel ban. Hawaii’s attorney, Neal Katyal, said the state plans to file a motion in district court on Friday asking that the court lift the stay of its proceedings and permit the filing of an amended complaint and motion to temporarily block the president’s new order, which is set to go into effect in two weeks. The Supreme Court was scheduled to hear cases challenging Trump’s previous 90-day ban on travelers from six majority-Muslim countries on Oct. 10, but canceled arguments after Trump issued on Sept. 24 new targeted restrictions on travelers from Chad, North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia. In briefs Thursday, the Department of Justice argued the Supreme Court should throw out the lower court rulings against the ban and rule the cases are now moot.

Hanabusa to primary Hawaii governor

Hanabusa to primary Hawaii governor. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) on Friday announced her plans to run for Hawaii governor. She will challenge Democratic incumbent Gov. David Ige (D). Her entrance to the race had been widely speculated, in part due to her sampled up fundraising efforts this year. “I am fourth generation from Waianae. I have had the honor and privilege of serving a community who was forgotten and ignored by many," Hanabusa said in a statement. "I know what it means to be focused and steadfast of the challenges and I know the difficulties in bringing about major changes," she said. She said she has gained the skill set and experience through her career to tackle the issues facing the state. "I believe we need experienced leadership to continue the Hawaii that I care so deeply about and love,” she said.
