Harvard Institute of Politics announces new fellows

The Harvard Institute of Politics announced its new slate of fall fellows in a video the organization tweeted on Monday. The five resident fellows, who remain on campus for the duration of the semester, come from a variety of backgrounds, including journalism and public office. They include: Journalist Margaret Talev, a senior White House correspondent for Bloomberg and a CNN political analyst, who served as president of the White House Correspondents Association; Amy Dacey, former CEO of the Democratic National Committee and former executive director of Emily’s List; activist Brittany Packnett, the vice president of national community alliances for Teach for America and cofounder of Campaign Zero, which is focused on solutions to ending police violence, according to the organization’s website. Retired politician Joseph J. Heck is the only former congressman among this year’s fellows. A physician and former US representative for Nevada’s third district, Heck was also a brigadier general in the US Army. John Noonan, currently a senior defense adviser for Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark. ), previously advised 2016 presidential candidate Jeb Bush on issues of national security and served as a defense policy adviser to Mitt Romney during Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. All three visiting fellows this fall are current or former mayors: Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles; Mitchell “Mitch” Landrieu of New Orleans; and Michael Nutter of Philadelphia. They will co-lead a study group on Politics, Potholes, and Public Service, according to the Institute’s website. Kaya Williams can be reached at kaya.williams@globe.com.

So what is a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics?

So what is a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics?. The Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics on Friday withdrew its invitation for Chelsea Manning to serve as a visiting fellow. So, what is a visiting fellow anyway? The Institute of Politics runs what’s called the Visiting Fellows program, which each semester invites a select number of “prominent” political practitioners to the university to serve for a shorter period of time — often a week — than a resident fellowship, which lasts a full academic semester. Most events are held with students, while some are with faculty, and they typically offer off-the-record conversations with relatively small groups of students. They also get a private office with a computer and phone, and they receive a “modest” stipend. Below is a full list of people who, according to the institute’s website, have been selected to serve as visiting fellows over the years. Sean Spicer, Chelsea Manning named as Harvard Institute of Politics visiting fellows

Sean Spicer, Chelsea Manning named as Harvard Institute of Politics visiting fellows. Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and Chelsea Manning are headed to Harvard. Spicer is the first White House press secretary and Manning the first transgender individual to serve as fellows, the Institute of Politics said. "We welcome the breadth of thought-provoking viewpoints on race, gender, politics and the media." Spicer served as White House press secretary before resigning in protest of former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci's hiring in July. Manning is a former Army private who leaked thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks. She was convicted in 2013 for violating the Espionage Act, but former President Barack Obama commuted Manning's sentence. She was freed in May. Spicer isn't the only visiting fellow at the Institute of Politics to have ties to Trump. The Institute of Politics visiting fellows will attend select events for students at Harvard.
