Don Cheadle Makes Potent Political Statements With ‘SNL’ Wardrobe Choices

YouTube/Saturday Night Live Actor Don Cheadle hosted Saturday Night Live this week, and one of the stories to come out of the show was not from the sketches but from Cheadle’s wardrobe choices between skits, which he used to make powerful political statements. When introducing musical guest Gary Clark Jr. for the second time, Cheadle donned a black t-shirt with the words: “Protect trans kids” on the front. Don Cheadle on Saturday Night Live. When he turned around to hug cast members, he revealed that the back of the jersey bore President Donald Trump’s last name with the number 45. (Trump, of course, is the 45th president.) Don Cheadle wore a Soviet Union hockey jersey with “Trump” and “45” on the back at the end of SNL after hosting. He has been a longtime activist in Africa ever since starring as hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda, a film about the Rwandan genocide, in 2004. He volunteers with the United Nations as their Global Environment Goodwill Ambassador raising awareness about climate change. And he also co-founded the non-profit organization Not On Our Watch with George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt to bring attention to genocide in Darfur and human rights violations elsewhere in the world.
