Trump nominates Canada envoy Kelly Knight Craft as US ambassador to the UN

Donald Trump is nominating Kelly Knight Craft to be the United States’ ambassador to the United Nations. Knight is currently the US ambassador to Canada. The president announced his choice in a pair of tweets on Friday evening, saying: “Kelly has done an outstanding job representing our Nation and I have no doubt that, under her leadership, our Country will be represented at the highest level. Congratulations to Kelly and her entire family!” The announcement comes a week after Trump’s first choice to replace Nikki Haley at the UN, the former Fox News host and state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, withdrew her candidacy. Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, announced her resignation last October and stepped down at the end of the year. It was reported on Thursday that Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky senator and Republican majority leader, had recommended her for the UN job. In 2017, as ambassador to Canada, Knight Craft made headlines about a key UN concern when she was asked in a television interview: “Do you believe in climate change?” She answered: “I believe there are scientists on both sides that are accurate.” Asked if she believed “there is science that proves that man is not causing climate change”, she said: “Well, I think that both sides have, you know, their own results from their studies, and I appreciate and respect both sides of the science.” In June 2017, Trump, who has himself cast doubt on accepted climate science, withdrew the US from the Paris climate accord, a global pact designed to combat the effects of climate change.

Trump backer who owned ‘inhumane’ housing picked to be Belgium envoy

A major financial backer of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, who once owned a housing estate in which low-income tenants were said to endure “inhumane” living standards, has been nominated as the US ambassador to Belgium. He will now undergo a month in a US state department “ambassadorial school” before making the move to Brussels. There is a certain amount of relief in Belgium that the nomination has been made at all – more than a year after the last US ambassador left the country’s embassy in Brussels. In 2013, Gidwitz told a court that he would not invest in the complex as it would be equivalent to a charitable donation, and if the owners had wanted to make charitable donations, there were better options. The housing project was eventually taken over by the city of Joliet. But in a related court case, Gidwitz was forced to acknowledge that politicians including the then senator Barack Obama had complained about “inhumane conditions” on the project, where there was said to be an overwhelming stench of urine. DoJ agrees to expand election inquiry after Trump meeting, White House says Read more The mayor of Joliet has described the 356-unit complex of high-rise apartments as “unsafe and dangerous, a public nuisance and a blighted area”. “If you can’t get planning permission for a [security] guard house, you can’t build a guard house,” he said, according to the Chicago Tribune. I’ve had volunteer jobs but I’ve never had one quite as serious. Belgium has been a great ally of ours for 150 years.
