Michelle Obama: Young people feel what’s happening now ‘not what they were taught’

Former first lady Michelle Obama said Tuesday that many young people only know life under her husband's presidency and may consider "what's happening now as intrinsically not what they were taught." "Many of the young people today, they only know Barack Obama as their president and what that standard felt like and what kind of messages were being talked about," she said at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women, according to CNN. "They grew up only under hope and possibility and options and opportunity and creating more space," she continued. "I think they will feel some of what's happening now as intrinsically not what they were taught." The former first lady did not specifically mention President Trump by name, though her comments could be viewed as in reference to the current administration. Obama has spoken out against Trump in the past. Last month, she criticized women who voted for Trump, saying they "voted against their own voice." She also argued that the White House was being led by fear. The former first lady argued Tuesday that there are key differences for today's youth, saying young people are "less tolerant of obvious inequities" than in the past.

Obama disaster relief chief accuses Trump of ‘malpractice’

The head of a federal disaster relief agency under former President Barack Obama blasted President Trump on Saturday for his handling of recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, accusing him of "malpractice." "He didn't hold a high level meeting on the storm response until Tuesday - SIX DAYS after landfall. "Storm played out exactly as forecast. Was clear it would be devastating, and it was. And then....the President left things on autopilot," Konyndyk added. "That has had real, tangible, harmful consequences for the speed and effectiveness of the response," Konyndyk tweeted. "It makes me so mad I could spit." Trump has repeatedly defended his administration's response to the storm-ravaged island, where local officials have pushed for federal supplies and power after Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on the U.S. territory earlier this month. Local officials estimate the island could be without fully restored power for up to six months. "Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help."

Michelle Obama delivers message supporting girls education

Former first lady Michelle Obama on Saturday called for more action to help young girls obtain an education in a video prepared for the Global Citizens Festival. "Today 130 million girls of all ages are still not in school," Obama said at the event, a music festival that focuses on addressing global humanitarian issues. "This breaks my heart, both as a woman whose life was transformed by my education and as the mother of two daughters who wants them and every girl on this planet to fulfill her boundless potential." "So while times change and I may no longer live in the White House, I have no intention of walking away from these girls," she continued. Obama also announced that the Obama Presidential Center would focus on creating programs and ways to address the lack of education for young women internationally. President Trump's administration denied a May report by CNN that it had ended the program. CNN had obtained an email from the Peace Corps announcing that the program would continue, but without the "Let Girls Learn" brand.

Republicans Helped Make the Politics of DACA So Toxic

Republicans Helped Make the Politics of DACA So Toxic. The problem is that the legislative branch, dominated by Republicans for quite a while, has refused to do much of anything regarding the millions of people who live and are building their lives in America without any legal right to be here. After venting publicly about Obama, and privately about Trump, Republican lawmakers should blame themselves for the toxic politics of ending DACA. If you’ve been in the country for a few months or years without legal status, that’s your problem. If you’ve been in the country for two or three decades without legal status, that’s the government’s problem. Decades of Republican lies about immigration reform and enforcement have led us to this point. The amnesty wasn’t as limited as promised, and the enforcement never came. Since that time, every few years, a new “comprehensive” approach to immigration tries to bring Republicans back to the 1980s. Part of his success in convincing restrictionists that he was serious was his willingness to say impolitic or even outright racist things when talking about the issue. Even so, they should still take up the opportunity to resolve the legal status of the “Dreamers” and everyone else living here without the full protection of the law too.

Read President Trump’s Full Statement on Rescinding DACA

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that the Trump Administration has decided to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, a program established under President Barack Obama that protects some undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children. Following Sessions' announcement from the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., the White House released a statement from President Donald Trump, in which he accused President Obama of " making an end-run around Congress and violating the core tenets that sustain our Republic." As President, my highest duty is to defend the American people and the Constitution of the United States of America. While new applications for work permits will not be accepted, all existing work permits will be honored until their date of expiration up to two full years from today. Our enforcement priorities remain unchanged. I have advised the Department of Homeland Security that DACA recipients are not enforcement priorities unless they are criminals, are involved in criminal activity, or are members of a gang. Congress now has the opportunity to advance responsible immigration reform that puts American jobs and American security first. As I’ve said before, we will resolve the DACA issue with heart and compassion – but through the lawful Democratic process – while at the same time ensuring that any immigration reform we adopt provides enduring benefits for the American citizens we were elected to serve. Our first and highest priority in advancing immigration reform must be to improve jobs, wages and security for American workers and their families. It is now time for Congress to act!

‘This Is About Basic Decency.’ Obama Rips Trump Over DACA Decision

Obama countered later Tuesday, writing on Twitter that "to target hopeful young strivers who grew up here is wrong, because they’ve done nothing wrong." Read Obama's full statement below: "Immigration can be a controversial topic. They may not know a country besides ours. And for years while I was President, I asked Congress to send me such a bill. And because it made no sense to expel talented, driven, patriotic young people from the only country they know solely because of the actions of their parents, my administration acted to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people, so that they could continue to contribute to our communities and our country. It’s a political decision, and a moral question. And now that the White House has shifted its responsibility for these young people to Congress, it’s up to Members of Congress to protect these young people and our future. Ultimately, this is about basic decency. This is about whether we are a people who kick hopeful young strivers out of America, or whether we treat them the way we’d want our own kids to be treated. It’s about who we are as a people – and who we want to be.

Obama team’s 2020 signals spark chatter among Dems

Democrats are expressing concern that advisers and aides to former President Obama have already begun signaling which candidate they might support for the White House in 2020. Simas, who once served as a top aide to Patrick, is an ardent supporter of Patrick, sources tell The Hill, while Jarrett has privately told friends that she would do what it takes to support him. But the reports of Jarrett’s and Simas’s interest in Patrick have left people wondering what the former president is thinking. Kamala has labeled herself as the female Obama but Deval was Obama before Obama was Obama,” the fundraiser said. Democratic insiders are expressing worry about some of the talk, and say it’s much too early to be pushing one particular candidate. “There is little appetite in the party to settle on a candidate early,” said Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons. It’s difficult to see either Patrick or Harris becoming a frontrunner in the race, particularly with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) signaling his continued interest. is another potential favorite and frontrunner should she choose to enter the race. “I want to see a wide open a process where there are no front runners,” said Democratic strategist Jim Manley. Still, some strategists say even if the Obama allies have their favorites, it won’t matter much in the end.
