Tech Was Supposed to Get Political. It’s Hanging Back in This Election.

Image SAN FRANCISCO — Over the last decade, this has become the tech industry’s hometown. Tech leaders were featured in a video for their preferred candidate, Ed Lee, who went on to win and was re-elected in 2015. Tech got political, fast. Mr. Benioff, a native of San Francisco and the most prominent tech executive in the city, was a financial backer of Mr. Lee. “This is the hottest election San Francisco has ever had for mayor,” he said. “I’ve just been super busy,” Mr. Altman wrote in an email, adding that he had “no idea” why others had been so quiet. Hunter Walk, formerly with Google’s YouTube and now a venture capitalist, appeared in the 2011 video supporting Mr. Lee. Breed, the mayoral candidate who seems to have the most backing from tech. Breed, a president of the board of supervisors who became interim mayor after Mr. Lee’s death, as the next mayor. Mr. Conway emphasized that he is still backing Ms.

Moore Thoughts: ‘Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour’ put entertainment above politics

“It’s knowin’ that your door is always open and your path is free to walk...” “Good evening, everyone. I’m Glen Campbell!” “From CBS Television City in Hollywood, it’s the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour,” said the announcer. I had forgotten about this TV show, but thanks to YouTube, I found a number of episodes of this brief TV gem that represented the career pinnacle of one of America’s most talented performers, and a native son of Arkansas. Glen Campbell was also the soundtrack of my youth, and variety shows like his were my exposure to everything that American entertainment had to offer. Unfortunately, entertainers now can’t separate their politics from their talent. There were 91 episodes that aired, and the who’s who of the day appeared on the program. The Duke was at the end of his career and certainly didn’t need any publicity, but he made time to be on Glen’s new show. This was back in the day when celebrities left their politics at home and did their best to make sure that everyone succeeded in their careers. In addition to "Gentle on My Mind," which was written by John Hartford, the Webb-penned hits "Galveston," "Wichita Lineman" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," launched Glen into the musical stratosphere. As was typical in the day, Glen’s musical prowess caused the execs at the movie and TV studios to take notice.

The Atlantic Politics & Policy Daily: The Writing on the Wall

Today in 5 Lines Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced that President Trump will sign a proclamation for the deployment of National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. Meet the bands who are making politics personal

Sorry, you need Flash to play this. As the lead singer in a punk band, there's something a bit different about Joe Talbot. It's not the word "pops" tattooed on his neck (a tribute to his dad, who hates neck tattoos). The juxtaposition between Joe's work and his artistic life is one of the things explored in my new documentary, The Art of Now: Band Politics for BBC Radio 4. From spirituals and the blues through to Bob Dylan, Public Enemy and grime; music and political protest have always been inseparable - but I wanted to investigate what I consider to be one of the most exciting waves of political songwriting we've seen in years. To explore what was so distinctive about the artists I'm playing on BBC 6 Music, I spent time at gigs and rehearsals with Nadine Shah, Life and Cabbage, asking what motivated them - and trying to find out what made their political song writing so utterly contemporary. Sorry, you need Flash to play this. Warning: Third party content may contain adverts Report Back with Joe Talbot, the lead singer of Idles tells me that caring for his mother, who suffered a stroke when he was 16, didn't just set him on the course of a future job in care - it fuelled his songwriting. I'm not going to pretend that I'm OK with where the NHS is, or where the government is, so why lie? BBC Music homepage BBC Music News LIVE

Social Media Upends Politics Playbook

Russian interference in the campaign included covert ads on social media and phony Facebook groups pumping out falsehoods. The U.S. Senate election in Alabama in December was rife with fake online reports in support of Republican Roy Moore, who eventually lost to Democrat Doug Jones amid allegations that Moore had sexual contact with teenagers when he was a prosecutor in his 30s. The difference now is how quickly false information spreads. A study released this past week found that false information spreads faster and wider on Twitter than real news stories. Federal regulations require a record of every political advertisement that is broadcast on television and radio. But online ads have no comparable requirements. Facebook has partnered with media organizations, including The Associated Press, to flag false information on its platform. Who Targets You designed an online tool that will collect Facebook political ads and deposit them in a database. Other organizations, including the AP, have begun publishing stories specifically intended to knock down false information circulating on social media. In Seattle’s municipal election last year, online ad spending increased 5,000 percent over the previous cycle in 2013.

Digital ads, social media hide political campaign messaging

Help Us Push Back Against YouTube’s Unfair Business Tactics

YouTube provides users with community guidelines, explaining which videos are acceptable for advertisers and which are not. The private video was marked, “Not suitable for all advertisers”; the public video was approved for all advertisers. But these were the same two videos! As an experiment (and, as an actual attempt to call on YouTube to act ethically), we began to request a manual review for some of the flagged videos. After review, “A Christian Response to Google’s Intolerance” was confirmed to be not suitable for all advertisers. After review, the trailer to my new book, Saving a Sick America, was also confirmed to be not suitable for all advertisers. Based on what guidelines? And what recourse do you have once YouTube confirms the demonetization of your video after review? And some videos for which we requested review are deemed suitable for all advertisers while others are not. Again, all we’re asking for is fairness, consistency, and ethical business conduct.
