Political events becoming more prominent at SXSW

CBS News Political Correspondent Ed O'Keefe says these events are opportunities for candidates and other political hopefuls. “If there’s anything a presidential candidate needs, it’s to get in front of a crowd, whether it’s an early primary state, or a potential swing state like Texas, so I think they see this as a real opportunity to come, road test some messages," O'Keefe said. Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez echoes this. He was among the figures at the DNC's fundraiser and meet-and-greet Friday evening. “It’s become an iconic national event, and I wanted to make sure people understood what we’re doing at the Democratic Party to win," Perez said. This weekend, 2020 presidential candidates Julian Castro, Elizabeth Warren, and Amy Klobuchar are just some politicians holding events. O'Keefe says these appearances can help with fundraising efforts. O'Keefe says this is the most prominent politics have been at SXSW, due in part to Democrats seeing Texas as a possible swing state in future elections. “Texas is very much in play for Democrats. Senator Bernie Sanders Discusses Politics, Policies And Plans With The Washington Post

Senator Sanders spoke for nearly an hour with Washington Post national political correspondent James Hohmann on a number of topics and answered Twitter questions. Their initial conversation focused on this week’s primary results and the influence he and the organization that sprang from his presidential campaign — called Our Revolution – has had on politics. “The chairman of the DNC Tom Perez endorsed Andrew Cuomo, who’s locked in a pretty competitive primary with Cynthia Nixon. When you have the head of the DNC, and I’ve worked OK with Perez on some areas, but to endorse one candidate over the other is not what the chair of the DNC should be doing. And when I ran in 2016, three million people in New York state were ineligible to vote. Sanders immediately noted that he “hated” that term and then renewed his vow to prevent cuts in Social Security and Medicare. In my state of Vermont, you’ve got elderly people who are trying to get by on $12 or $13,000 a year Social Security. Sanders, who turns 77 in September, responded he would decide whether he will run “at the appropriate time.” “Number one, 2018, as I have said many times, is the most important midterm election in my lifetime and I’m going to do everything that I can to see that we end one party rule here in Washington where the Republicans, right-wing extremist Republicans control the Senate, the House, and the White House. And then I’m focusing on the important issues that need to be discussed. Believe me, there will be more than enough candidates, I’m quite confident, running for president and at the appropriate time, I will make that decision as to whether I do it or not.

‘Protecting our democracy’: DNC chair defends suit against Trump and Russia

Chairman Tom Perez on Sunday defended the Democratic National Committee’s decision to sue Russia, WikiLeaks and the Trump campaign over Russian election interference, saying the DNC was “protecting our democracy” and could “walk and chew gum” when it came to keeping its focus on the midterm elections. “So funny, the Democrats have sued the Republicans for Winning,” he wrote on Saturday. “Now he [sic] R’s counter and force them to turn over a treasure trove of material, including Servers and Emails!” It was unclear why Republicans would sue to obtain Democratic party emails, many of which are already public owing to Russia-directed hacking that began in April 2016. In January 2016 testimony about an FBI investigation of cyber-attacks including on the DNC, Comey said Democrats had not turned over computer servers but substituted a review of the system performed by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. It’s not trial by tweet … this is going to be a court where facts matter and justice is served Tom Perez Trump disagrees. Responding to a claim by Trump 2020 director Brad Parscale that the suit was merely a fundraising ploy by a “desperate, dysfunctional and nearly insolvent Democratic party,” Perez told NBC’s Meet the Press: “Those are almost the precise quotes we heard from the Nixon campaign in 1972.” In that year, Democrats sued the president’s re-election committee for $1m over the Watergate break-in. Trump has denied collusion or obstruction of justice and called all investigations into Russian election interference a “witch hunt”. He did so again on Sunday afternoon. His campaign, meanwhile, sent out a fundraising email that called the DNC lawsuit an attempt “to keep the Russia witch hunt going and their bankrupt party alive”. American politics is turning into Starbucks

This is not, of course, the official Democratic position. And there are only three Democratic senators — Indiana’s Joe Donnelly, West Virginia’s Joe Manchin III and Pennsylvania’s Robert P. Casey Jr. — who have less than a 100 percent lifetime score from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. In some places, surely. But Amy Walter of the Cook Political Report points out two complicating factors: First, the heterodoxies of local candidates seem to matter less and less in the way Americans make political choices. Increasingly, Walter says, “all politics is national.” Voters believe that support for any Democrat — even a more conservative Democrat — is actually support for the Nancy Pelosi-Chuck Schumer team. “Somewhere along the way,” argues Walter, “the idea that each district is different went by the wayside.” She calls this the “Starbucksization” of American politics. “No matter how you feel personally” on abortion, she says, “you have to vote to support the Democratic Party values.” Think on that a moment. Second, Walter points out that the political battlegrounds in American politics have shifted. The Democratic targets of opportunity in the 2018 midterms are generally not, for example, in the rural House districts of Georgia; they are in the upscale suburbs of Atlanta. This trend also narrows the ideological range of American politics.
