Taylor Swift, Kanye West at odds again – this time on unexpected sides of...

Kanye West has been a vocal supporter of President Trump since the 2016 election. According to the New York Times, the rapper is headed to the Washington to have lunch with the president Buzz60 It’s the celebrity feud that will not die. Call it an unforeseen effect of the Donald Trump era that Swift and West have become representatives of America’s political divide – in a way that nobody could have ever predicted nearly a decade ago, when the two stars’ fates collided onstage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. How different things are now. After stepping away from public appearances shortly after his summit with the president-elect at Trump Tower in 2016, West returned with a vengeance this year, bringing his Make America Great Again hat with him. He praised Trump on Twitter and, most recently, in a monologue on “Saturday Night Live” – again deleting his social media accounts after embarking on several politically motivated rants. From associating with alt-right figures to sharing his questionable takes on slavery, West’s political turnaround has thrilled conservatives – he has a White House visit with Trump and Jared Kushner reportedly lined up for Thursday – while rendering him unrecognizable to fans that connected with his raps from a decade ago. It wasn’t until Sunday, though, that Swift made the leap toward endorsing candidates – she posted a letter on Instagram supporting Tennessee’s Democratic congressional candidates while condemning racism and discrimination. Like so many other aspects of 2018, how fans feel about Kanye vs. Taylor likely comes down to how they feel about Trump, with the president routinely praising West on Twitter while announcing Monday that he “likes Taylor’s music about 25% less” after her Democratic endorsements. And as the same voices on the right that praise West begin to voice their newfound aversions to Swift, with other commenters claiming that Swift actually "cares more about black people" than West, the two artists are once again diametrically opposed, in a more bizarre way than fans ever could've expected.

Taylor Swift no longer silent on politics, endorses two Tennessee Democrats for midterms

In a rare move, singer Taylor Swift has weighed in on politics in a major way, endorsing Tennessee Democrats Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper, who are running for Senate and House of Representatives, respectively. By her own admission, Swift has been "reluctant" to voice her political opinions in the past, but, she said in an Instagram post, "due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now." "I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country," she wrote. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent." Swift went after Bredesen's senate race rival, Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn, in her post, saying the politician's voting record "appalls and terrifies me." In a tweet, Bredesen thanked Swift for her "kind words." "I'm honored to have your support and that of so many Tennesseans who are ready to put aside the partisan shouting and get things done," he wrote. "The choice continues to be clear: voters can either have more of the same old partisan shouting that's coming out of D.C, or they can hire someone who has a track record of getting things done for Tennessee," Bredesen's campaign added in a statement to CNN. Swift included a plea to her young adult fans in her post, urging them to register before the deadline. Swift added: "Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values.

What about her reputation? Taylor Swift’s politics draw praise, backlash, comment from Trump

Were you ready for it? It seems nobody expected Taylor Swift to ever get political, and her Sunday night post on the upcoming Tennessee Senate race sent shock waves through social media. She endorsed Bredesen and offered a harsh rebuke of Blackburn, saying "her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me." Even President Donald Trump weighed in Monday, telling reporters on the White House lawn as he was returning from a trip to Orlando: "Let’s say that I like Taylor’s music about 25 percent less now, OK?" Some believe she should have stayed silent: @taylorswift13 Respectfully, be quiet and sing! I guess you’re more pop than country now anyway. You’re country fans are gonna be disappointed. Now you’re on the level of Katie Perry. Taylor Swift gets political? Many praised the singer for finally voicing her opinion and encouraging people to vote.

Taylor Swift breaks political silence, backs Tennessee Dems

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Music superstar Taylor Swift says she's voting for Tennessee's Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen, breaking her long-standing refusal to discuss anything politics. Swift posted on Instagram Sunday evening acknowledging she's previously shied from voicing her political opinions. But she says several personal and public events over the past two years have prompted her to speak out. Swift has faced criticism for not speaking about political issues despite having a global platform. The pop star — a Tennessee native — slammed Republican U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn in her lengthy post, writing the Republican candidate's voting record "terrifies me." Swift says she's voting for Bredesen for Senate and Democrat Jim Cooper for the House. Swift didn't acknowledge Bredesen's recent endorsement of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, but said people may never find a candidate or party with whom they agree completely on every issue. Taylor Swift typically stays out of politics, but she’s publicly supporting gun reform

On Friday afternoon, Taylor Swift published an Instagram post that took many people by surprise: A logo for this weekend’s “March for Our Lives,” the student-led rally urging Congress to take action on gun control and stop mass shootings. “No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence. Or to a nightclub. Or to a movie theater. Or to their place of worship,” the pop superstar wrote in the caption. “I’ve made a donation to show my support for the students, for the March For Our Lives campaign, for everyone affected by these tragedies, and to support gun reform. But Swift’s statement is significant, simply because she’s one of the most powerful celebrities on the planet, with many millions of followers – and typically, she avoids saying or doing anything remotely political. Last January, Swift’s tweet about the Women’s March (“So much love, pride, and respect for those who marched. I’m proud to be a woman today, and every day.”) also became controversial; many criticized her for not attending the event, even though she uses feminism to promote her brand. Swift has made a concerted effort over the past two years to stay out of the public eye, so when she does break her silence on a topic, it’s clear that she really wants people to pay attention.
