Politics Podcast: The Rudy Giuliani Rampage

It’s been an interesting couple of days for President Trump and his new lawyer, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani contradicted the president about payments to Stormy Daniels in a Wednesday interview and spent the rest of the week adding details and clarifications to the original contradiction. In this episode, the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast team talks to New York University constitutional law professor Rick Pildes about whether the new comments create legal complications for Trump. The team also discusses where the investigation of Michael Cohen could be headed. The Atlantic Politics & Policy Daily: Rudy or Not?

-Written by Elaine Godfrey (@elainejgodfrey) Today in 5 Lines During an address to the annual NRA convention in Dallas, Texas, President Trump assured voters that he would protect the Second Amendment, criticized the special-counsel investigation, and thanked rapper Kanye West for his support. President Trump told reporters that Rudy Giuliani needed to “get his facts straight” after the former mayor said that Trump reimbursed his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels. Hours later, Giuliani walked back his comments. Jennifer Pena, the White House physician assigned to Vice President Mike Pence, resigned after fallout over President Trump’s doctor and former pick to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, Ronny Jackson. CNN reported earlier this week that Pena had raised concerns about Jackson’s workplace conduct last fall. The Department of Homeland Security ended a program that allowed 57,000 Honduran citizens to temporarily live and work in the United States. The U.S. added 164,000 jobs in April, and the unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent. Today on The Atlantic Absurd in Every Way: The Iran Deal was a cover for American inaction and former President Obama’s paralyzing fear of war, argues Reuel Marc Gerecht. Changing a Sacred Text: Some of France’s most prominent political leaders are calling to strike particular verses from the Quran. The idea doesn’t sit well with the country’s Muslims.

Mueller Reportedly Considering Appropriate Thank-You Gift for Giuliani

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—The special counsel, Robert Mueller, is actively considering what would be the most appropriate thank-you gift to send to the former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, a source close to Mueller’s team has confirmed. According to the source, Mueller and his team were behind closed doors on Thursday morning to discuss the gift and appear to be close to a decision. “They’ve been around and around on this, but a consensus seems to be forming on a bottle of single-malt Scotch,” the source said. Moments after the news of Mueller’s gift to Giuliani leaked, however, Michael Avenatti, Stormy Daniels’s lawyer, indicated that he had already sent Giuliani a single-malt Scotch on Thursday morning and advised Mueller to select an alternative gift, such as Dom Pérignon champagne or beluga caviar. Responding to Avenatti’s comments, federal prosecutors investigating Michael Cohen issued a statement asserting that they had, in fact, sent Giuliani an entire case of champagne last night, which would appear to leave caviar as Mueller’s only remaining gift option. The source close to Mueller said that, no matter what gift the special counsel ultimately chooses, it will be an inadequate token of gratitude. “You can’t put a price tag on what Rudy has done for Bob,” the source said.

The Atlantic Politics & Policy Daily: Phone a Fox & Friend

Today in 5 Lines In a freewheeling interview on Fox & Friends, President Trump appeared to confirm that his lawyer, Michael Cohen, represented him in a matter with adult-film star Stormy Daniels. He also defended White House physician Ronny Jackson and accused former FBI Director James Comey of committing crimes. It was a busy day on Capitol Hill: Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt told lawmakers that he had some knowledge of raises awarded to two of his closest aides, contradicting his earlier statements; and conservative social-media personalities Diamond and Silk alleged that they were silenced by Facebook in a House Judiciary Committee hearing. The Senate confirmed former CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be the next secretary of state. Comedian Bill Cosby was found guilty of drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004 and could face up to 30 years in prison. Cosby's attorney said he plans to appeal. Today on The Atlantic Embracing Trump, Rejecting Trumpism: While offering nothing groundbreaking, French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech before a joint session of Congress on Wednesday “was a primer in how to clean the floor with your host,” writes Rachel Donadio. OnPolitics Today: Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, will plead the Fifth in Stormy Daniels case

(Photo: YANA PASKOVA, GETTY IMAGES) When it comes to the Stormy Daniels case, President Trump's lawyer plans to plead the Fifth. Michael Cohen, the president's longtime attorney and "fixer," said he will assert his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination amid a lawsuit from Daniels, the adult film star who wants freedom from a hush agreement in which Cohen paid her $130,000 to not speak of an alleged affair with Trump. Info tied to that payment was seized by federal agents this month, Cohen says, so he'll stay silent. Trump's VA pick, Ronny Jackson, handed out opioids and wrecked a work car while drunk, colleagues say Trump wants Ronny Jackson, the White House doctor, to head up the Department of Veterans Affairs. A couple of snags, though: He got the nickname "candy man" for his prolific prescription practices and allegedly "wrecked a government vehicle" while drunk, according to past and current colleagues who spoke with Senate investigators. The Senate delayed Jackson's confirmation hearing Tuesday based on "serious allegations." Trump's response? The same one he's had a lot lately: We'll see what happens. France's Macron calls on Congress to reject Trump's nationalism French President Emmanuel Macron didn't call out Trump directly during a Wednesday address to Congress, but he didn't have to. “You can play with fears and angers for a time," Macron said.
