Condemning all debate with Bannon amounts to giving up on politics

The first is that we need to break out of our echo chambers. One such collision came in the controversy over Steve Bannon’s (non) appearance at the New Yorker festival. To host Bannon at a literary festival, critics argued, was to afford a white supremacist a platform and to provide him with legitimacy. He doesn’t need the New Yorker to give him legitimacy. Steve Bannon dropped from New Yorker festival after invite sparks anger Read more A festival hosted by the uber-liberal New Yorker may not, of course, be the best place to engage with Trump supporters. “Every minute spent debating the opponents’ lies,” he insisted, “is a minute when we fail to deliver our truth.” It’s true that simply presenting facts and figures about job losses or racial disparities rarely sways people. That means tackling figures such as Bannon in public debates, not refusing to engage with them because their ideas are odious. Engagement can also mean challenging ideas that we know we despise. The real audience would have been those who were open enough to rethink their views on Bannon. That is to imply that there is no future for politics.

Rudy Giuliani has turned out to be a dangerous liability for Trump

When Donald Trump famously descended the escalator of Trump Tower to announce he was running for president in June 2015, I found my thoughts immediately turning to Rudy Giuliani. Here was another son of New York City making a wildly unrealistic bid for the White House, just as Giuliani had done eight years previously. US still under attack from 'pervasive campaign' by Russia, officials warn Read more When Trump won, it seemed like a big reward was on its way to Giuliani. Giuliani had been given perhaps the most important job of all: fighting Trump’s corner as Robert Mueller’s FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election homed in relentlessly on the White House. So why did he bring up the allegation, which had apparently been put to White House officials, at all, deepening the intrigue surrounding the Trump Tower meeting? I’ve talked to influential business people in New York who know both men and did business with them in the 1990s, when Giuliani was New York mayor and Trump was rising as the city’s most egotistical developer. Some of Giuliani’s campaigning for Trump bordered on the unhinged. Trump’s strategy has been to attack Mueller relentlessly. He wanted an attack dog to bite back at Mueller and there was no one more snarling than Giuliani. The next day he was arguing that collusion was not a crime, anyway.

Steve Bannon is creating a ‘deplorables’ cryptocurrency to boost global populism

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is working on a cryptocurrency project to reward political activism and “provide an alternative to the financial system”, according to an entrepreneur who claims to be working on the project. Last week, during an hour-long interview with CNBC, Bannon briefly mentioned a plan to launch his cryptocurrency tokens. Neither company would comment on Wernick’s alleged investment. Sitting next to Wernick at the press conference was former Cambridge Analytica director-turned-whistleblower Brittany Kaiser, now an IOVO advisor. “[A utility token’s] primary purpose is not just as a means of speculation, but it has intrinsic value on a network. “It is the Holy Grail to be a utility token rather than a security token because you avoid all the security laws.” The very concept of "utility tokens" is, nonetheless, disputed: while the category is recognised in Switzerland — alongside payment tokens and security tokens — the US Securities and Exchange Commission is more lukewarm on the idea. Ironically, the person who many credit for initiating Bannon to cryptocurrency owes most of his recent fame to an ICO. In September 2017, Pierce said he had been talking to Bannon about blockchain technology “many, many times”, although he added that the then-White House strategist was probably too busy to pay much attention to crypto just yet. He adds he felt it was “important that educators and stewards of technology provide the understanding”. “[Bannon] has surrounded himself with people who understand the value of [cryptocurrency], and he himself is very intelligent.
