Countdown to the midterms: 4 days out

Trump emphasizes the "H" in Barack Obama's name President Trump emphasized the "H" in former President Barack Obama’s full name as he criticized him during a rally in Indianapolis. He had a very small crowd, they don’t talk about that. And they never talk about how big our crowds are.” Watch the moment: Trump continues his attack on Democrats at Indiana rally President Trump attacked Democrats, pushed his immigration message, and touted a new jobs report at a rally in Indiana Friday. Trump was in Indianapolis to campaign for Republican Mike Braun, who's running against Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly. Her last major campaign appearance and speech was nearly two years ago, days before the November 2016 presidential election, when she made remarks in Pennsylvania. I'm talking about runoff elections in Georgia and Mississippi. Trump was traveling in her "personal capacity," a White House official said. Melania Trump’s parents become citizens through ‘chain migration’

Melania Trump’s parents were sworn in as US citizens on Thursday, completing a legal path to citizenship that their son-in-law has suggested eliminating. Viktor and Amalija Knavs, both in their 70s, took the citizenship oath at a private ceremony in New York City. Trump and Pence products of family migration they want to curb, records show Read more Lawyer Michael Wildes said the Knavses applied for citizenship on their own and didn’t get any special treatment. He confirmed that the first lady sponsored their green cards. Her husband, Donald Trump, has proposed ending most family-based immigration, which he refers to as “chain migration”. Amid a bitter debate over immigration – particularly the Trump administration’s separation of children from families crossing the border illegally – Wildes said the Knavses’ attaining citizenship was “an example of it going right”. Along with targeting illegal immigration, Donald Trump has proposed sharply curbing legal immigration. Under the law, permanent residents must live in the country for at least five years before applying for citizenship. The Knavses’ citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush around the Jacob K Javits Federal Building. Viktor Knavs is 74, two years older than his son-in-law.

Outrage grows as families are separated. Will Trump change his policy?

(CNN)The White House's "zero tolerance" immigration policy and resulting separations of undocumented parents and kids is exploding into the most emotive and politically unpredictable test yet of President Donald Trump's effort to change the character of America. It's not just the usual Democrats who are criticizing the administration -- some prominent Republicans, including first lady Melania Trump and former first lady Laura Bush, religious leaders and influential figures in Trump's conservative evangelical base are also speaking out. "It's an atrocious policy," former White House communications director and Trump ally Anthony Scaramucci said on CNN's "New Day" Monday. Current first lady Melania Trump also expressed concern about the situation, though she did not break with her husband's position that only Congress can stop the separations. But the separations storm is injecting an unpredictable dimension to a critical week ahead in the immigration debate that sources tell CNN will include a meeting between Trump and GOP lawmakers on Tuesday. The House could vote as early as this week on a plan that would address family separations although the legislation would do little to change the underlying practice that has been implemented under the Trump administration. If the administration continues that practice, parents and children would still be separated. Three sources told CNN that Trump will meet House Republicans at the Capitol on Tuesday to discuss next steps on immigration, a gathering that could seal the fate of the House's hard-fought compromise immigration bill. And so you have to pay attention to that," House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows told reporters Friday. After spending a week already earlier in the year trying and failing to fix the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, there is little appetite among Republican leaders for a new immigration debate before the midterms.

Twitter Puts Politics Aside to Wish Melania Trump a Speedy Recovery After Kidney Surgery

Melania Trump received a bipartisan outpouring of support on Twitter Monday after the first lady’s office announced on Monday that she had successfully undergone a procedure to treat a “benign kidney condition.” Actor Sean Astin tweeted: “This is one of those moments where all partisanship and rancor stops for a moment as we ALL wish First Lady Melania a swift return to good health!” Democratic New York Sen. Chuck Schumer wrote: “Just heard news that @FLOTUS underwent surgery today. Sincere wishes for her speedy recovery.” And CNN Republican pundit Ana Navarro, a vocal Trump critic, sent well wishes to both Mrs. Trump, 48, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, whose pancreatic cancer diagnosis was also announced on Monday. “Because you see, we don’t have to support somebody or agree politically, to feel empathy,” Navarro wrote. I just lost a close friend to pancreatic cancer, a cruel disease. I also hope for a speedy and full recovery for Melania Trump. Because you see, we dont have to support somebody or agree politically, to feel empathy. Others on Twitter agreed that this was a time to put politics aside and practice empathy instead. Mrs. Trump’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, released a statement Monday saying that the first lady will likely remain hospitalized for the rest of the week as she recovers. “This morning, First Lady Melania Trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition,” the statement said. The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere.” President Trump is expected to visit his wife in the hospital on Monday, Grisham told CNN’s Kate Bennett.
