Parkland’s legacy: Heightened security, stricter dress codes and political advocacy

The NewsHour’s Student Reporting Labs spoke to several of them about the tragedy’s impact on their daily experiences, how safe they feel and the role of politics. We wanted to take some time tonight to hear from students around the country. Memphis Cleveland: Obviously, Parkland was a really big turning point in this, but it has happened in a lot of different places that, you know, maybe we don't hear about every day. But because of Parkland, so many things have changed, even in my smaller school. Like, right after it happened, everyone was a lot more paranoid than they are now. The doors are locked all the time. James Abbot: I actually feel unsafe, a lot more unsafe after Parkland, just because a lot more kids realize they have the opportunity to shoot up a school. You know that it's not that hard to get a gun, and a lot of kids know that. And it really has done a lot in the face of lawmakers and people that can make change. Kim Leadholm: I feel hopeful that I will feel safer in the future.

Nancy Pelosi Secures Votes of Rebel Lawmakers by Agreeing to Support Term Limits

Nancy Pelosi’s path to Speaker of the House effectively seemed secure on Wednesday after she agreed to comply with a proposal limiting her tenure as the top Democrat in the House of Representatives to three terms. The Brief Newsletter Sign up to receive the top stories you need to know right now. View Sample Sign Up Now Immediately after Pelosi issued her statement in support of it, all three representatives issued statements of support for her. This included two of the most vocal lawmakers calling for new leadership, Reps. Seth Moulton and Tim Ryan. The show of support effectively gives Pelosi the backing she needs from her caucus for speaker’s gavel, although the official vote will not take place until Jan. 3. But the support was conditional upon making this term her last, unless she receives overwhelming approval from the caucus in the 117th Congress. The requested rule change, however, would need to pass by a majority of Democrats in the new Congress. Pelosi said the proposal will be voted on in February, but that she intends to comply with it even if it does not pass. The proposed rule change will most certainly push Pelosi over the top in terms of speaker votes – she needs 218 votes on the floor – but a handful have still said they will vote against her. Mr. Security or Mr. Politics? 8 things to know for November 19

Trying to keep it together: Attempting to hang on to his foundering coalition, Prime Minister Netanyahu has begun to portray the downfall of his government as a blow to Israel’s security. First to the stump: Netanyahu’s speech is widely covered as the opening shot in his re-election campaign. The idea that the coalition has to stay together because of secret security issues was actually floated almost a full day before Netanyahu’s speech by Israel Hayom’s Amnon Lord, in what some may see as yet another sign of the close relationship between the paper that works as a Netanyahu mouthpiece. Netanyahu “can’t hold the rope at both ends, keeping his coalition stable and putting down Naftali Bennett at the same time,” columnist Moti Tuchfeld writes, calling on the prime minister to give the defense job to Bennett. Bennett and Jewish Home No. 2 Ayelet Shaked are slated to give a statement to the press at 10:30 during which they are widely expected to announce they are resigning, thus toppling the government. Uri Ariel, another Jewish Home minister, tells Army Radio that the two are ready to resign, meaning the government could fall as early as Wednesday. Peace plan deferred: Early elections will likely give the US administration another reason/excuse to delay its long-awaited peace plan, ToI’s Eric Cortellessa writes. “Netanyahu’s right-wing government is dying. “As long as the situation in Gaza is ongoing, the Knesset committee won’t take up the bill to dissolve the Knesset,” he says, essentially threatening to put Israel in an indefinite totalitarian state of emergency.
