‘The Conners’ recap: A little politics, a little religion and a lot of grief

At a special screening for first episode of spin-off "The Conners," stars Lecy Goranson, Michael Fishman and Maya Lynne Robinson talk Roseanne Barr's exit from the original show. (Oct. 17) AP It’s politics, religion, and the ever-present ghost of Roseanne on Tuesday's belated midterm election-themed episode of “The Conners.” “The Separation of Church and Dan” saw America’s favorite working-class family go to church, Dad struggle with his faith in the wake of his wife’s death and Darlene’s son, Mark, navigating fractured political lines at the polls. Heavy topics for sure, peppered with the usual jokes to keep things from getting too dark. Not even an impromptu poker night organized by his daughters could raise his spirits. “I don’t need my friends sitting around here feeling sorry for me,” Dan said before storming out. Meanwhile, Mark (Ames McNamara) enlisted the help of Aunt Jackie in a polling assignment for school and found out just how volatile politics can be. “As a pollster, your job is just to remain neutral and just record the answers,” Jackie told him calmly, but she couldn't resist jumping for joy at a Democrat voter. Mary (Jayden Rey) only wanted to go if her cousins Harris (Emma Kenney) and Mark went, too, leaving D.J. to beg his atheist sister Darlene to come along. “Oh god,” Darlene sighed.

‘Roseanne’ is a hit for many reasons — Trump-loving politics is just one of...

From the moment Dan Conner (John Goodman) wakes with a start, we're in a familiar world rarely seen on TV. It's a common phenomenon in American life. Dan laughs. Dan and Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr) are a 60-something couple still demonstrably in love with each other. Nobody in the family cares how he dresses at home — "God did not give me this big a head to hold a narrow mind," says Dan — but they worry he'll get beat up. When Mark tells his mother, Darlene (Sara Gilbert), that the bully said he was weird, she says that's ridiculous. This whole family's really weird. The show garnered enormous publicity because both Roseannes, the character and the comedian, voted for Donald Trump. When Jackie comes by to drive Darlene to a job interview, her daughter assures Roseanne that everything will be fine. And as Darlene counsels Mark, from someone's perspective, we're all weird.
