Trump will ask justice department to look into campaign surveillance

Donald Trump said on Sunday he will ask the justice department to look into whether his 2016 presidential campaign was infiltrated or surveilled. Trump/Russia review: Le Carré meets Mario Puzo in Moscow and Manhattan Read more Trump tweeted: “I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes – and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!” Trump has been promoting a theory circulating in conservative circles about a possible FBI spy on the campaign. Giuliani said they had been told about possible “infiltration” of the campaign. “I don’t know for sure, nor does the president, if there really was one.” The justice department declined to comment on Sunday. The justice department’s internal watchdog is in fact already examining Republican complaints of FBI misconduct in the early stages of the investigation into Russian election interference and possible links between Trump aides and Moscow. inspector general Michael E Horowitz announced an investigation in March, at the request of attorney general Jeff Sessions and congressional Republicans. Sessions and the lawmakers urged Horowitz to review whether FBI and justice department officials abused surveillance powers by using information compiled by Christopher Steele, a former British spy, and paid for by Democrats as part of the basis to justify monitoring Carter Page, a former campaign adviser to Trump. The article cited work by Devin Nunes of California, an ardent Trump supporter and chairman of the House intelligence committee, who has demanded information on an FBI source in the Russia investigation. The New York Times reported separately last week that at least one government informant met several times with Page and George Papadopoulos, another former foreign policy adviser on Trump’s campaign. Papadopoulos was charged last year by special counsel Robert Mueller and pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

-Written by Elaine Godfrey (@elainejgodfrey) Today in 5 Lines Nine students and one teacher were killed after a gunman opened fire at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, according to Governor Greg Abbott. A student who survived the shooting told a reporter, “It’s been happening everywhere. I’ve always kind of felt like eventually it was going to happen here, too.” The House rejected an $867 billion farm bill. Members of the House Freedom Caucus voted against the legislation after failing to secure a future vote on a conservative immigration bill. The Trump administration released new guidelines that would withhold federal funding from health clinics providing abortions or referring patients for abortions. Trump nominated Robert Wilkie, the acting veterans affairs secretary, to be the agency’s permanent leader. Rudy Giuliani told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that the special counsel agreed to narrow the scope of an interview with the president down to “about two” topics, signaling that Trump’s team is continuing to work with Mueller while also ramping up public attacks. Mary Sansone, godmother of New York politics, dies at 101

Sansone founded the New Era Democratic Club in Brooklyn with her husband, Zachary. She also created the Coalition of Italian-American Organizations. She also backed Republican George Pataki as well as Democrat Mario Cuomo for governor. In fact, her club referred to itself an “independent political organization.” Modal Trigger Bloomberg on Tuesday said Sansone’s endorsement gave his first run for mayor in 2001 credibility. “Back in 2001, when not a lot of people were predicting success for my mayoral campaign, Mary Sansone told me I was going to win. Her crystal ball proved to be as good as her famous meatballs,” Bloomberg said in a statement. “Mary passionately believed that partisan politics should never get in the way of serving the public. She and her husband, Zach, were always kind and generous to me, and I always enjoyed the visits to their home – and of course, her meatballs. Well, Mary Sansone, without question, to me, was the most interesting person in New York City, because a lifetime – a lifetime of changing this world and changing this city for the better,” de Blasio said. He declared June 12, 2016 Mary Sansone Day.

Trump Removes Giuliani from Legal Team by Naming Him New White House Doctor

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In a move that has stirred controversy in both legal and medical circles, Donald J. Trump removed Rudy Giuliani from his legal team on Monday by naming him the new White House doctor. The decision to appoint the former New York mayor to such a key medical position raised eyebrows, in no small part because Giuliani would become the first White House doctor in history not to possess a medical degree. But, in an official White House briefing to announce the decision, the press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, pushed back against the criticism of Giuliani’s nonexistent medical credentials. “Rudolph Giuliani is every bit as qualified to be a doctor as he is to be a lawyer,” she said. Dr. Giuliani hit the ground running in his new job, immediately scheduling an hour-long appearance on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program to discuss the state of Trump’s health. “Is the President’s mental health good?” Giuliani asked on the air. “Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. You really have to define what you mean by ‘all.’ If he’s out of his mind, so what? That’s nobody’s business. The important thing is, I’m on TV again talking a lot, and I’ve never felt so alive.”

Giuliani won’t rule out Trump taking the fifth in Mueller’s Russia investigation

Donald Trump’s new attorney, Rudy Giuliani, would not on Sunday rule out the possibility that the president would assert his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination in the Russia investigation. “I’m going to walk him into a prosecution for perjury like Martha Stewart?” he said. The lifestyle entrepreneur was convicted in 2004 of lying to investigators and obstruction in an insider trading case. “The mob takes the fifth amendment,” Trump said. Giuliani also said the leak of a list of questions Mueller may want to ask Trump “helped” the president. “I don’t think Bob Mueller leaks,” Giuliani said after saying “first they leak the questions” and being corrected about the source of the document. I don’t know. We’re helped because it shows he has no case.” Giuliani’s latest interview came after days of conflicting statements about the investigations into the president. The former New York City mayor, who was hired by Trump last month, said he was still learning the facts of the Mueller case and Trump’s knowledge of a $130,000 hush payment to the adult-film actor Stormy Daniels. Daniels has alleged a sexual tryst with Trump in 2006, which Trump denies.
