NEENAH, Wis. (WBAY) - Mike Ellis, a man who spent more than forty years of his life dedicated to Wisconsin politics, has passed away. Ellis, a Republican, announced in 2014 that he would not seek re-election after 32 years of representing Neenah in the Wisconsin State Senate. He served as President of the State Senate from 2011 until his final days in office in 2015. Mike Ellis was 77-years old. “Someone once told me that Mike Ellis wasn’t just the leader of the Senate, he was the Senate. He has left a lasting impression on this state because of his strong personality and dedication to public service," the Appleton Republican said in a statement. "A favorite son of the Fox Valley who served us so well. Republican U.S. Senate candidate Leah Vukmir tweeted, "My sympathies and prayers go out to Mike Ellis' family during this very sad time. In his time in the Legislature, Mike was a passionate individual who will be remembered for the strength and determination he had for his constituents." Democratic governor candidate Mahlon Mitchell tweeted, "I send my sympathies and prayers to Senator Ellis' family.
