Robert De Niro never stops talking politics

Robert De Niro was on the famed stage of the Apollo Theater Wednesday night — and he was singing the same old song. The actor was introducing an HBO documentary about the legendary Harlem venue — which doesn’t contain a single reference to President Trump — but nonetheless, he ranted for the millionth time about the prez. “Every time I set foot in this hall of art and entertainment I can feel its incredible history,” De Niro said before a screening of “The Apollo.” “In these disturbing times when the administration is promoting divisiveness, and racism, by being here tonight we are making a statement that we reject it.” He added, to a crowd that included Smokey Robinson, Angela Bassett and Keegan-Michael Key, “No, you don’t, not in this house, not on this stage.” These days, it seems that De Niro cannot step on a stage or see a camera without launching into a Trump tirade. Then again, Trump did tweet last year that De Niro was “a very low IQ individual,” who had “received to [sic] many shots to the head by real boxers in movies.”

Show tunes meet politics for timely Randy Rainbow performance

“I’m just trying to make people laugh at a time when we need it,” Rainbow said. Rainbow said he was accepted by his family from a young age. “It always was a coping mechanism, growing up in a liberal, Jewish household from Long Island, New York with a sense of humor and deflection through comedy,” Rainbow listed. Some videos and accompanied songs performed were published by Rainbow during the build-up to the 2016 election. Before the show, Rainbow said the political climate has become more of a comedy goldmine than ever before. Rainbow admitted it is difficult for him to watch Fox News for an extended amount of time, but he does anyway. For comedic purposes, watching the network serves as research, even for just a couple of minutes each day. Being Jewish himself, Rainbow said he finds the tragedy in Pittsburgh horrific. Hearing from people about the approaching midterm elections, Rainbow said many have told him they are scared by the current political circumstances and devastation. But he’s also been told his comedy is giving those in despair a feeling of hope and positivity.

Logic of the vendetta now guides our politics

Whether the packages delivered to leading Democrats and liberals turn out to be functioning bombs or dummy devices intended to send a message, the effect is largely the same: American politics are descending further into the logic of the vendetta. Related Stories They’re right that the other side did something bad, but they’re wrong that the first bad act justifies the second. They’re also wrong because, outside of war, “sides” don’t really kill people; people kill people. But Trump has a point, too. More relevant, Trump’s most loyal defenders leaped to make the case that Schumer, Pelosi and all of the Democrats and pundits blaming Trump for fomenting a climate of violence are hypocrites given the things they’ve said and done. Hannity still has a point. The point is not about “what about-ism” or “both sides-ism.” As a conservative who is critical of Trump, the Democrats and the mainstream media, I have no team here. The point is that everybody is using the real or perceived hypocrisy of the “other side” to justify their refusal to look squarely at their own side’s irresponsible words and deeds. It’s obvious to me that Trump’s demonizing rhetoric, his inveterate lying and his insinuations that his supporters are the only real Americans are dangerously irresponsible. But the reactions to Trump are often irresponsible, too.

Pipe bomb fallout: Exploiting the politics of murder

As President Trump and the media resume their war of words after a brief time-out, the furor over the attempted terror attacks has cast a harsh spotlight on the politics of violence. The finger-pointing over the crude bombs sent to CNN, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, other leading Democrats, and Robert DeNiro is not surprising, despite the inconvenient fact that we have no idea who the perpetrator is. But it's unfolding against a long historical backdrop of partisans trying to seize the moral high ground and blame the opposition for "creating a climate" where a lunatic tries to kill people. And there is no shortage of examples of liberals and conservatives playing that card, depending on the target and the perceived ideology of the criminal involved (though these days the debate turns toxic before we even have a suspect). In the latest round, things have gotten particularly heated between Trump and CNN, which evacuated its New York bureau after receiving one of the unexploded devices, which was addressed to John Brennan (who doesn't even work there). At a Wednesday night rally, the president said that those in the political arena "must stop treating political opponents as being morally defective." His critics, naturally, think he should follow that advice. If you took Trump out of it, most people would say yeah, there's too much hostility and negativity in the media. "They just sent a bomb to CNN, and the president doesn't say a word about that. Sarah Palin was not to blame for the deranged man who badly wounded Democratic congresswoman Gabby Giffords and others, even though she had put out a map with crosshairs over Democratic targets.

Using Profanity and Anger to Make a Political Statement

However, I take issue with Mr. Bruni’s assertion that “anger isn’t a strategy.” Does Mr. Bruni feel the same about the anger expressed by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school students, the anger expressed by the women writing about their own #MeToo experiences or the anger currently being expressed through social media regarding Homeland Security’s separation of children from their parents? Being passive and calm does not always raise the same awareness and can sometimes show weakness and lack of commitment. Anger can bring needed change; profanity is rarely helpful. To the Editor: Frank Bruni may be right to blame incendiary celebrity rants for helping President Trump. But the reason that Democrats are currently out of power, despite being right on a majority of issues, is not too much fire but lack of it. For better or worse, what Donald Trump brought to voters was passion. If calculation and moderation couldn’t defeat him in 2016, why would we expect it to work now? They accomplish nothing except to embarrass themselves and push the self-righteous Trump supporters further into his corner. Let’s be rational in our opposition and bring the populace that is getting fed up to see the light. To the Editor: Frank Bruni argues that anger is not the appropriate strategy to use against President Trump.
