Politics In The News: Massachusetts Primary Election

David Greene talks to Frank Phillips, Boston Globe State House bureau chief, and NPR congressional correspondent Scott Detrow, about what to expect. You have an outsider female congressional candidate challenging an establishment Democrat and a moderate Republican governor facing an onslaught from the right. He knows a lot about Massachusetts politics. GREENE: So one of the major storylines we're seeing is this Democratic primary race. PHILLIPS: Well, it's a real challenge to it. GREENE: That he has a serious - a challenge as serious as this. GREENE: All right, Frank Phillips of The Boston Globe talking to us about the primary today in his state. GREENE: Let me turn now to NPR congressional correspondent Scott Detrow, who's been listening with us. DETROW: Yeah, he criticized Sessions for two indictments that went out over the summer against Republican congressmen - the first two Republicans on the Hill who endorsed President Trump, actually. OK. NPR's Scott Detrow.

Letter: Ranked choice voting could take money out of politics in California

Ranked choice voting may take money out of politics Re: “Top-two primary election system failing Californians” (Opinion section, July 12): Maine’s ranked choice voting is much better than the money-dominated top two primary and our old system. Maine’s new RCV elections are even better because voters are allowed all choices, for both partisan primaries and general elections. When California gets statewide RCV, there will be no need for campaign fundraising and we’ll get a better government. More important, the world will see a better election system, one that will perhaps end the divisive “parliament” election system that seems to be the underlying cause of all wars, including the war of 1776, which was approved by England’s parliament against its own citizens in America. Get editorials, opinion columns, letters to the editor and more in your inbox weekday mornings. Sign up for the Opinion newsletter. To get statewide RCV without the 10-year delay that the Bay Area cities waited for, we should immediately use our state’s budget surplus to provide all counties with modern instant runoff voting (IRV)-ready voting equipment.
