Montgomery County Supervisor Chris Tuck won’t seek re-election

Tuck is a Republican whose term on the board ends this year. Tuck’s announcement ends months — and perhaps a few years — of speculation about his future on the board as the supervisor has previously raised doubt about whether he would run for a third term. While on the board, Tuck successfully pushed for conclusions to divisive debates about the old Blacksburg school properties. He has drawn criticism from local Democrats and other elected officials in liberal-leaning Blacksburg. Unable to settle on a price, the board of supervisors’ Republican majority decided to sell the old high school site to a firm controlled by the group that operates the Shelor Motor Mile car dealership. “I really do wish the town of Blacksburg would have bought the high school property,” Tuck said. About a year ago, Tuck stirred some more debate when he pushed for a referendum that would have asked local voters if they wanted to end the commissioner of the revenue and treasurer’s positions as elected constitutional officers. “I believe it would best for the county to see those offices become part of county function,” he said, “but I wanted it to be a bipartisan effort.” Tuck said he also decided to seek the referendum because he knew at the time that Shelton and Democrat Commissioner of the Revenue Helen Royal each had no plans to seek re-election. Vote Local plans to back one Democratic candidate for District B, but that person’s name has yet to be disclosed. Jenni Gallagher, chairwoman of the Montgomery County Democratic Committee, wrote in email Thursday that she’s aware of only one candidate from her own party who plans to run for the District B seat.
