In the long history of the American presidency, have canine references — crude, thuggish slurs President Donald Trump hurls with finger flicks — ever been so frequently employed in the resolution of political disputes? Who would want to be called a dog by the president of the United States? Which brings us to Scott Taylor, our 2nd District congressman, now seeking re-election. Last week, the congressman dropped out of a WHRO-sponsored debate with Democratic candidate Elaine Luria because he said one of the station’s reporters had tweeted and blogged opposition to him. Taylor has a point. So, the question: Do you employ a person to report on a campaign who previously sought (stridently) to rally political opposition against that campaign? What if Taylor had said this: “Look, folks, I don’t care what the other side does. Life is unfair to everyone.” “I understand this community better than anyone,” Taylor could have said. I believe in the people I represent and, by gosh, I will show up anytime, anywhere and debate under any conditions. During the 17 years since 2001, however, five different people have represented the 2nd District — a political churn, Rep. Taylor could credibly argue, that denies Hampton Roads the congressional seniority necessary to protect the region’s interests in Washington (which are abundant and fundamental).
