‘Trump kicks back’: Ohio voters expect strong state of the union

A short and snowy drive away, for example, Bill Strimbu was more optimistic about the economy – and the state of the union. Like or dislike the president, there’s not many who can take what he takes on a daily basis and still push us forward Kyle Walker “The economy is booming right now and Trump doesn’t get any credit for it,” said the president of the Nick Strimbu Trucking Company, heralding its best year since his grandfather started hauling goods cross-country in 1926. Strimbu has been a Republican “since the day he started paying taxes”, but he said many of his friends were Democrats who voted Trump. None were having second thoughts, he said, especially as the party swerves sharply to the left. “We’re not socialist-type people here,” he said. “John F Kennedy wouldn’t even be allowed to be in the Democratic party if he were alive today.” On Tuesday, Trump will deliver his State of the Union. While Trump spent the weekend in Florida, playing golf with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, his campaign asked supporters for advice on what he should say in Tuesday’s speech. But Walker grades Trump on what he is delivering – not what he is tweeting. Asked how they would vote in 2020, few had second thoughts. But by the time she ran again in 2016, Stack was ready for change.

Roger Stone made waves in Ohio politics before gaining infamy

However, before Friday’s blockbuster news – and even before he was infamous – Stone was a fairly respected national political consultant with expertise in Ohio. Stone ran Republican President Ronald Reagan’s 1984 re-election campaign in Ohio and 11 other states as the northeast campaign director. He declared Jacobs would spend $800,000 on television alone – a large sum for a treasurer’s race even by today’s standards – to beat Democratic Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow. Jacobs was unsuccessful in his bid, with critics arguing it was because of Stone’s attack-dog tactics. Stone wasn’t done with Ohio statewide politics, though. Reagan never personally endorsed in contested Republican primaries. Stone would frequently appear as an expert who knew the political lay of the land in Ohio in news stories, but didn’t make an overt appearance in politics in the state until 2009. Still an adviser to Jacobs, Stone worked on the campaign opposing the legalization of casinos in Ohio. Jacobs bankrolled the campaign, and it was never made entirely clear if Stone was officially with the campaign or employed by Jacobs directly. John Kasich as a “petulant stoner who will never be president of the United States.” A previous version of this story identified the Dave Johnson who worked with Roger Stone as the current Ohio Republican Party treasurer.

PX column: Ex-Congresswoman Jean Schmidt makes a comeback in politics, launches 2020 campaign

Mike DeWine has a large family, long political career and some priorities for the state. The suburban Cincinnati Republican has filed to run for the Ohio House in 2020, hoping to return to Columbus for a second go-around in her political career. "Last summer, I received a call from a prominent Columbus Republican asking me to come back. Their support would be critical, especially if Schmidt ends up having a primary opponent. Amid the cloud of an ethical issue stemming from her relationship with a Turkish-American interest group, Schmidt was unceremoniously ousted in the 2012 GOP primary by tea party-backed political newbie Brad Wenstrup. Schmidt is not on Facebook or Twitter, but acknowledged she'll likely have to have a social media presence in the upcoming campaign. For nearly a decade, Schmidt has volunteered with City Gospel Mission's Flying Pig Marathon training program. She's gotten to know Cincinnati attorney David Singleton of the Ohio Justice and Policy Center. Patterson maintained that she was wrongfully convicted for the 1994 shooting death of a 15-year-old girl in Dayton, Ohio. Some call her "Mean Jean."

Kasich: Trump must put the country ahead of his politics

John Kasich (R) responded to President Trump's prime-time address Tuesday by calling on Democrats and Republicans to seek compromise and reach a deal to reopen the federal government. Kasich, who is mulling a potential 2020 presidential run, said in a statement that progress on a deal to reopen the government has to begin with Trump being more "flexible" on his goal to secure funding for construction of a wall or fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. "The president and the Democrats have to learn to compromise and put Americans first," Kasich, whose term as Ohio's governor ends on Jan. 14, wrote on Twitter. "Border security is important, but both sides should be willing to negotiate on how we do it." In his speech, the president invoked the recent murder of a California police officer, Cpl. Ronil Singh, whom police say was killed by an immigrant suspected of being in the country illegally. Trump called the issue of border security "a crisis of the heart, a crisis of the soul." "All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration," Trump said Tuesday night. "It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages." Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), among others, issued responses to Trump's speech Tuesday night, accusing the president of holding federal workers hostage over his demand for a wall.

Andy Samberg & Sandra Oh Won’t Talk Politics At The 2019 Golden Globes, But...

Trae Patton/NBC The Oscars still don't have a host after the Kevin Hart debacle, but the Golden Globes, which air this Sunday, Jan. 6, have two of the best: Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Oh, whose first hosting gig ever is this Sunday's Globes, added that even though they don't have any plans to discuss politics on the Golden Globes stage, that doesn't mean nobody will. And that's something Oh is completely embracing. You make it an open and safe place for whoever wants to use that platform to speak." "I want to focus on [real change] 'cause people can pooh-pooh Hollywood all they want — and there is a lot to pooh-pooh, sure — but we also make culture," she said. Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images Samberg is a great host, something that really came through when he hosted the Emmys in 2015. He is currently filming the sixth season of Brooklyn Nine Nine, which airs on NBC on January 10. Samberg won a Golden Globe in 2014 for his work on the show. Meanwhile, Oh just finished filming Season 2 of her hit show Killing Eve, for which she nominated for a Globe this year. With resumés like that, it's obvious that these Golden Globes will be a night fans won't want to miss, whether politics are involved or not.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich vetoes gun bill, cites ’rotten, stinking politics’

John Kasich on Wednesday vetoed legislation that would make Ohio the last state in the nation to shift the burden of proof in self-defense cases from the defendant to prosecutors. The term-limited Republican governor’s decision to veto House Bill 228 is likely to be the first in a series of battles with the GOP-dominated legislature over legislation passed during his final days in office. HB 228 would also loosen a number of Ohio gun-control rules – including allowing individuals to challenge local gun-control ordinances in court. Kasich indicated earlier on Wednesday that he intended to veto the legislation “Why would I sign a bill that gives more power to the gun advocates?” the governor said during a Columbus Metropolitan Club luncheon. “For the first time in my lifetime, the possibility of somebody coming through that door and shooting us exists,” he continued. It now remains to be seen whether proponents of the bill can get enough votes in the Ohio House and Senate to override Kasich’s veto. While the bill needed only a majority to pass, a veto override requires the support of 60 percent of lawmakers in each chamber. Right now, state law only allows no duty to retreat when defendants are in their home or vehicle. Last week, lawmakers passed a number of other bills that Kasich is also expected to veto, including a pay raise for lawmakers and other elected officials and a “heartbeat bill” that bans abortion when a fetal heartbeat can be detected (which can be as soon as 6 weeks into a pregnancy). The Ohio General Assembly also sent Kasich a second abortion bill that would ban the procedure used for almost all second-trimester abortions.

Nancy Pelosi nominated by Democrats to be next House speaker

House Democrats overwhelmingly nominated Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday to be the next speaker – but she failed to defuse a rebellion within her ranks, setting the stage for a potential showdown on the chamber floor when the new Congress convenes in January. Read more The 203-32 vote represented a critical test of strength for the longtime Democratic leader, and proved she commands broad support from her caucus. If Democrats win a final House race yet to be called after the midterm elections, and where their candidate is leading, they will hold 235 seats, meaning Pelosi could afford to lose 17 Democratic votes if all Republicans oppose her. “I’m talking about scores of members of Congress who just gave me a vote – are giving me a vote of confidence,” Pelosi said. When it came to the floor vote, only four Democrats opposed her. This time could prove trickier after several new members vowed to vote against Pelosi as candidates. “We remain united behind our goal of new leadership and we intend to vote against Leader Pelosi in Caucus and on the floor of the House.” Moulton, who circulated a letter signed by 16 Democratic incumbents and new members, that calls for a change in leadership, called on Pelosi to develop a “plan for succession”. “But we still have many glass ceilings to break for women of color.” Jeffries’ ascent to the No 5 spot ensures that the caucus will have two African Americans on the leadership team for the first time. Both are viewed by their colleagues as a potential heirs when Pelosi steps down. “There are a lot of differing views, even within the Democratic caucus.
