News, Scandal And Politics: Theatre At Its Most Powerful

Oscar Wilde opined how life imitates art in his 1889 essay The Decay of Lying, a phrase now quoted constantly. Directed by Sam Mendes, The Lehman Trilogy (until October 20) at the National practically belies explanation. A masterclass in family drama, this three-plus-hour production tells the story of the financial family who changed the course of history. Beautifully performed by Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles who play the three Lehman Brothers, as well as their sons and grandsons, not to mention the odd wife and girlfriend, convey this family's story while simultaneously reflecting on the overall world of American capitalism as we know it. Nina Raine's latest play Consent (until August 11) began with a sold-out run at the National Theatre before transferring to the West End. A powerful production that triggers some essential but chafing questions, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo Movement - has unsurprisingly proven divisive amongst audiences. Settling into the space between black and white, the story here follows a group of unapologetic thirty somethings wading their way through a rape trial. Arriving from Broadway, the multi-Tony-Award-winning play Come From Away tells the story behind the 7,000 passengers who were stranded in Gander Newfoundland following the September 11 attacks. The community opened their homes and hearts to those stranded and the play has been hailed as a much-needed reminder of the power of human compassion in the face of darkness. It has been revealed that Mark Rylance will take the stage for two charity performances of Harold Pinter's Nobel Lecture Art, Truth and Politics on October 2nd and 4th at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
