What is the US census citizenship question? The controversy explained

The government plans to ask people taking part in the 2020 national census if they are US citizens – and the supreme court appears to be leaning in favor of approval. The census is conducted every 10 years to count the people living in the US. The states argue the plan is unconstitutional. The commerce department, which is in charge of the census, says it decided to add the question at the request of the justice department, which argued it was necessary to help enforce the Voting Rights Act. “Yesterday, the Supreme Court took up the Census Citizenship question, a really big deal. The citizenship question was on every census between 1890 and 1950, but has not been on the standard census form since then. Currently, the government gets citizenship data from the American Community Survey, which is done every year but only goes out to a small number of US households. Three lower courts, in New York, California and Maryland, have ruled against the plan. Two of the judges said that asking about citizenship would be unconstitutional, violating the provision that says the census must fully enumerate people living in the United States. A majority of the justices appeared to be leaning toward approving the question during arguments on Tuesday.

Barr says Mueller report is coming ‘within a week.’

Mr. Barr said that the special counsel had not participated in writing those letters, nor seen them in advance, though he gave Mr. Mueller the chance to see his letter summarizing the investigation’s main findings. Representative Nita M. Lowey, Democrat of New York and chairwoman of the full Appropriations Committee, pressed Mr. Barr to say whether the White House has seen or been briefed on the contents of the Mueller report beyond what was in his letters about it to Congress. “But I’ve already laid out the process that is going forward to release these reports hopefully within a week,” he added. “I’m not going to say anything more about it until the report is out and everyone has a chance to look at it.” In the past, Justice Department officials have said that Mr. Barr had not shown the White House any part of the Mueller report or briefed Mr. Trump’s team about its contents. There are exceptions to the rule, however, particularly if a judge issues an order permitting the material to be disclosed. “This whole mechanism for the special counsel, as I said, was established during the Clinton administration in the wake of Ken Starr’s report,” Mr. Barr said. Among other things, it called for the special counsel to write a “confidential” report for the attorney general, who would then relay his own report to Congress saying the investigation was over. The exchange underscored Mr. Barr’s sweeping view of executive power and that the attorney general ultimately answers to the president. Though the Justice Department generally defends the law in any challenges to it, Mr. Barr indicated he was willing to make an exception in a case where the president asked for something different than was legally defensible. The Justice Department inspector general intends to complete by May or June his investigation into aspects of the Russia inquiry, including whether law enforcement officials abused their surveillance powers to spy on a Trump campaign aide, Mr. Barr said.

15 Claims From Trump’s Speech to CPAC, Fact-Checked

When they raise their tariff from 10 percent to 25 percent then 40 percent, and they said to me, ‘We expected somebody would call and say, you can’t nobody called so we just left it.’” This is misleading. The Green New Deal is a proposal by liberal Democrats to combat climate change. The legislation calls for the expansion of renewable energy sources, which accounted for about 17.1 percent of electricity generated in the United States in 2018. What Was Said “So we fired Comey. Schumer who called for his resignation many times. What Was Said “We never have empty seats.” False. What Was Said “I flew to Iraq — first time I left the White House because I stayed in the White House for months and months because I wanted the Democrats to get back from their vacations from Hawaii and these other places.” False. Other claims Mr. Trump also made at least 9 other inaccurate claims that The Times has previously fact-checked: He understated the number of Electoral College votes Mrs. Clinton won as 223. He exaggerated the United States’ annual trade deficit with China as $500 billion. He falsely claimed just 3 percent of detained unauthorized immigrants “come back for a trial.” (About 72 percent showed up in the 2017 fiscal year.)

‘We can’t let fear consume us’: why Parkland activists won’t give up

“One of my goals in the next two years is to get 71% youth voter turnout in 2020,” Hogg told the Guardian in a recent phone interview. I think there’s a lot of people that, quite frankly, really, really, really hate our president David Hogg Working with young gun violence prevention activists from across the country, the Parkland made a bet this past spring that local organizing – and more local news coverage – could make a difference in the 2018 midterm elections. Over the summer, the March for Our Lives activists traveled on a bus tour to dozens of states to host rallies and voter registration drives, all with the goal of increasing youth voter turnout in the midterm elections. March for Our Lives is still focused on gun policy. The group is hoping to play a stronger lobbying role to pass gun control bills in state houses this year, as well as pressuring the senate, which is still controlled by Republican allies of the National Rifle Association, to pass a historic bill expanding background checks on gun sales. It’s possible to measure the influence of March for Our Lives so far by tallying up their year of wins and losses. These laws are already being used to prevent shootings, Hogg said. A national movement While the media spotlight still focuses most often on a handful of the most famous Parkland students, the teenage survivors a have spent the past year connecting with young activists who have long advocated for gun violence prevention in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. This was the answer that Hogg, among others, gave , in a phone interview that had been scheduled for 9pm. “Does March for Our Lives still exist in four years?

Progressive populism: a different kind of political beauty | Hightower

Hours after being sworn into the House, Rashida Tlaib was heard saying, "We're gonna impeach" President Trump. What can we do to build on these victories and produce more in this year's elections — and in 2020? We must assess this broad strategy ourselves, for most of today's mainline political analysts focus solely on "candidate politics." Obviously, we need information about the principals who are asking for our votes, but too much "focus on the candidate" pushes America's election story into the swirling shallows of gossip and puffery while ignoring the bigger, more significant story in 2018: movement politics. Thus, the media reduce our nation's vital democratic exercise to comic-book buzzwords like "blue wave" and "red wall," trivializing the extraordinary efforts of the multitudes who are striving to create a progressive future. New York Times commentator Frank Bruni, for example, even consulted a Harvard professor of evolutionary psychology to develop his novel grasp of last year's voter behavior ("Politics aren't pretty. But politicians are," Nov. 20). Normally a smart guy, he veered off into the psycho-pop ditch, writing after the election that the meteoric rise of such progressive candidates as Andrew Gillum in Florida, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York and Beto O'Rourke in Texas was attributable to a political quality they share: They're "hot," the scribe explained. Apparently, the lesson we should take from these candidates is to prioritize hunkiness and gorgeousness in recruiting future progressive candidates. Grassroots participants and some of us less prominent pundits would argue that in 2018, progressive forces prioritized a very different kind of political beauty: genuine democratic populism.
