A secret tape, a rightwing backlash: is Michael Cohen about to flip on Trump?

For months, the political world has hung on the question of whether Donald Trump’s former aide Michael Cohen would cut a deal with federal prosecutors to spill the beans on the president. For the White House, it seems, the question of whether Cohen will cooperate with prosecutors is not if, but when. Fox News, the president’s approved station, sprinkled its broadcasting schedule on Wednesday with Cohen-bashing, convening a panel to paint Cohen as an unethical lawyer, an opportunist, a unregistered lobbyist and an inconstant friend. Matt Drudge, the circus barker of the far right, was more succinct on Thursday, branding Cohen “the Rat”. But one thing is for certain is this doesn’t look good, and people in the Trump ranks are talking about it. “Because Michael was always considered to be the ultimate loyalist, and this really throws a monkey wrench in that whole theory.” A second former Trump campaign adviser, Sam Nunberg, said that Cohen’s decision to hire the Washington power lawyer Lanny Davis made it clear he was looking for a deal. “Any political person would know: the minute he signed Lanny Davis, it was over,” said Nunberg. His decision to release the audio recordings with Trump could annoy prosecutors who would have preferred to preserve such material as potential evidence, legal analysts say. And other former aides who have struck deals with prosecutors, including Michael Flynn and Richard Gates, did not grant major interviews or send their lawyers on television in advance of their agreements, leading to speculation that Cohen may yet be seeking some detente with Trump. “My wife, my daughter and my son have my first loyalty and always will,” he told ABC this month, adding: “I put my family and country first.”

Congressman Denies He Knew About Alleged Sexual Abuse When He Was a Coach at...

Congressman Jim Jordan says he didn’t know anything about allegations of widespread sexual abuse on the Ohio State University wrestling team when he was a coach there more than 20 years ago. In a statement and interview with Politico, the the Ohio Congressman denied the accusations and said he would “have done something about it” if he had known. “It’s not true,” Jordan told Politico. “If what is alleged is true, the victims deserve a full investigation and justice.” The NBC News report this week detailed accounts from three former wrestlers who Jordan worked with as an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State from 1986 to 1994. The three former wrestlers said Strauss would grope and sexually assault athletes while treating them — and the widespread abuse was common knowledge in the locker room. “I considered Jim Jordan a friend,” Mike DiSabato, a former wrestler who said he was abused by Strauss, told NBC. “But at the end of the day, he is absolutely lying if he says he doesn’t know what’s going on.” Dunyasha Yetts, another former wrestler, told NBC he told Jordan about an instance when Strauss allegedly pulled down Yetts’s pants, and he and his teammates talked to Jordan several times about the abuse. “For God’s sake, Strauss’s locker was right next to Jordan’s and Jordan even said he’d kill him if he tried anything with him,” Yetts told NBC. Ohio State’s investigation into Strauss and the alleged abuse came as a result of DiSabato coming forward, NBC reported. Jordan was elected to Congress in 2007 and has become a powerful conservative leader who has been named as a potential candidate to replace Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House.

Cultural changes come to the speaker circuit — ‘Me Too’ is in, politics is...

Liz Bowyer, global co-head of brand and content strategy at Goldman Sachs and head of “Talks at GS,” said the bank is keen to hear from people about topics that go beyond business and include gender, race and climate change. Controversial topics, however, are not entirely on the outs. Diversity of speakers has also become a major factor. “The corporate marketplace is steering away from controversy,” Jacobs said. Former presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, spoke to graduates at Yale University earlier this week, and former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave a commencement address at the Virginia Military Institute this month. “As of late, some of the colleges may be a little too politically correct,” Epstein said. “Colleges are in the business of raising funds.” Some former White House officials from both the Trump and Obama administrations are having a harder time getting bookings, according to one person who is familiar with the speaker booking world. That’s some [people] not all,” said a talent agency executive who asked not want to be named since they continue to represent speakers. The people who book speakers are looking for hope, said Lindsay Samakow, an agent in the lectures division at talent agency ICM Partners, which counts TV producer Shonda Rhimes and transgender actress Laverne Cox among its clients. “People are indeed booking political talks,” Samakow said.
