Why do Central European nationalists love Israel?

Central European leaders view Mr. Netanyahu as a close ally. For his part, Mr. Netanyahu has cultivated relationships with Central European populist leaders. It is widely believed in the region that in order for a leader of a small Central European country to get an invitation to visit the White House, he should either buy a lot of American military equipment or Mr Netanyahu should lobby for the visit. Many of the founders of the Jewish state were from Central and Eastern Europe and their political imagination was shaped by the politics of the newly independent states that emerged in the region after World War I. It has preserved the heroic ethos of sacrifice in the name of the nation that nationalist politicians covet for their own societies. Central and Eastern Europeans see Israel as the only Western society that is winning the population war by reversing the trend of demographic decline. Central European nationalists’ fascination with Israel East European populists also share Mr. Netanyahu’s mistrust in anything that appears post-national or hints of cosmopolitanism. They agree with Yoram Hazony, a conservative Israeli political philosopher and Netanyahu supporter who is the author of the influential ‘The Virtue of Nationalism,’ who says that the major political clash in world history is neither between classes nor nations, but between nationalists who believe that the nation state is the best form of political organisation and imperialists who advocate for universal empire. Mr Orban sees much to admire there. Populist leaders in Central Europe view Israel as the model of how a small state could be sovereign and heroic.

Bolsonaro’s politics of nationalist redemption

Capping off an electoral campaign marked by passionate anti-establishment sentiment, the jailing of a former president and rising political violence, Brazil took a collective leap of faith and elected right-wing nationalist strongman Jair Bolsonaro to a four-year term. The big picture: Throwing out the conciliatory political playbook that winning presidential candidates have used since the country’s 1985 transition from military rule, Bolsonaro won for a simple reason: He credibly promised to turn Brazilian politics upside down. Under a banner of radical right-wing reform that raised investors’ expectations, Bolsonaro’s insurgent candidacy became a social phenomenon. The 63-year-old former Army captain and longtime Congressman exploited popular social media platforms with fake news, thrived on misogynistic and homophobic rhetoric, promised a purge of the left and embodied a no-holds-barred approach to the country’s spiraling criminal violence. Though his Social Liberal party performed better than expected, winning 52 seats in the 513-member lower house of Congress, Bolsonaro will need a larger coalition to pass legislation. While Bolsonaro himself has equivocated about his position on old government pension programs, his market-friendly economics advisor has promised comprehensive pension reform. It remains to be seen where exactly the requisite votes will come from. Meanwhile, a proposal to privatize state electricity and energy companies has reportedly been shelved. Public security is the campaign issue on which Bolsonaro may feel he most needs to deliver immediate action. Why it matters: Brazil’s hard turn to the right opens the door to the military’s return to power as Bolsonaro sets the country on a new course for trade and foreign policy.

Beyond politics and nationalism to morality

Separating immigrant families is beyond politics, it’s beyond national security and it’s beyond the law. Separating immigrant parents and children from one another is a moral issue. The basis of American values is the fundamental belief that human beings have certain unalienable rights, basic human rights. Regardless of who you are, you will be treated as a human being with dignity and we will not act in ways that violate your humanity. Safety and psychological security are the foundation of human development. These needs are thus bound to our human rights. When children face experiences that undermine their security, as in the case of being abruptly and indefinitely separated from their parents, it is traumatic, disrupts their development and can contribute to long-standing psychological harm. Losing a child through forced separation undermines a parent’s sense of efficacy and can induce painful psychological states such as anxiety, guilt, rage, despair, hopelessness and helplessness. Knowingly acting in a manner that induces such states in parents violates their instinct to care and protect as well as their human rights. Separating immigrant parents and children is a human rights issue that challenges the core values of our democracy.

Nationalism, domestic politics, and China’s global leadership role

Whether China is willing and able to take on a global leadership role in the economic, political and security realms is of particular interest. China’s approach to global leadership has also served as an indicator of Chinese grand strategy —whether China will maintain narrow national interests that only extend into its region or contribute to the global order as a ‘responsible stakeholder.’ How should we understand China’s current global role and its ambitions? For its part Beijing has at times viewed the call for China to shoulder more international responsibilities “as part of an international conspiracy to thwart China’s development.” But neither argument gives adequate attention to how Chinese domestic public opinion may shape the degree and nature of China’s leadership role. First, Xi Jinping uses nationalism to boost his legitimacy, and this has taken on a definitively global tone through his ‘two guidances.’ This refers to Xi’s call for Beijing to “guide the international community to jointly build a more just and reasonably new world order,” and “guide the international community to jointly maintain international security.” Second, the Chinese government increasingly surveys the Chinese public on a wide array of topics in order to respond to (or manipulate) public concerns. The bottom line is that nationalism supports a greater global role for the prestige and enhanced ability to protect Chinese interests, and also creates limitations on the nature and degree of China’s global involvement. Foreign aid programs have been much slower to develop, however, because of domestic factors. Specifically, while U.S. foreign aid and trade partnerships have arguably been strategically oriented—focused on combatting communism in the Cold War and counterterrorism today (Pakistan is a major beneficiary and foreign military financing was the third largest project in 2016)—China pursues projects that directly benefit China economically. In other words, the aid projects are focused on industries in which Chinese companies are deeply involved and stand to profit. China’s Security Role Domestic public opinion also creates incentives for the Chinese military to play a global, albeit limited role. By 2020, approximately 150 million Chinese citizens will be traveling and living abroad.
