Trump Says He Will Sign Free Speech Order for College Campuses

Pete Marovich for The New York Times OXON HILL, Md. The president made the announcement during a rambling two-hour speech to activists at the Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington, but he did not provide any details about the possible executive order. The issue of free speech on college campuses has for years been a cause célèbre among young conservative activists, who point to instances around the country in which conservative voices have been shunned by liberal students and professors. “If they want our dollars, and we give it to them by the billions, they’ve got to allow people like Hayden and many great young people, and old people, to speak,” Mr. Trump said, drawing huge applause. Mr. Williams thanked the president for supporting young conservatives such as himself. The president has raised a similar threat before, implying he would withhold federal funds from Berkeley after it canceled a speech by Milo Yiannopoulos, a conservative speaker and professional provocateur. He said the executive order would “require colleges to support free speech if they want federal research” funding. It is not clear how long the idea has been under consideration at the White House or whether the president decided to pursue an executive order because of the episode involving Mr. Williams, which Fox News and other conservative outlets covered extensively. It is also unclear how much the president can withhold federal aid to colleges without congressional action. The president accused “open border” Democrats of letting murderers, rapists and drug dealers into the country.

Today’s News from Inside Higher Ed

To the frustration of some Brown officials, the public impression that the institution has a free speech problem lingers nearly five years after the Kelly incident, even though no speaker has been shouted down since Kelly’s appearance and the university makes special efforts to bring in a diverse range of speakers. A SPEAK analysis suggested that the speakers Brown professors and administrators invite to campus are almost exclusively liberal. That’s where our country is going right now, that somehow facts are malleable … we just don’t think that’s true.” SPEAK's breakdown of speakers brought to events at Brown in 2017 showed that nearly 95 percent of them leaned left in their political views. When SPEAK went public with its data last spring, its members left the report in the mailbox of every political science professor. In an interview, President Paxson said the university “does well” in bringing in a wide range of speakers and that students are exposed to many different views -- not just those that are politically oriented. Paxson said she is concerned that the public’s confidence, particularly among conservatives -- not just in Brown, but in all higher education institutions -- has deteriorated. Research shows that Republicans have soured on higher education -- with 58 percent believing that colleges have a negative influence on the direction of the country, according to a Pew Research Center report released last year. “SPEAK may want more speakers of a certain flavor and it’s their right to speak about that,” Paxson said. Administrators at other universities certainly could.” Paxson said she urged SPEAK to work with campus faculty, and with student groups on campus about the speakers they court -- and Brigham said that his group is doing so. He said SPEAK is helping student groups think about the speakers they want, while the College Republicans also try to bring in more conservatives.

‘Kardashian-style politics’: Police slam violent protests at Milo Yiannopoulos’ event

"We've always got Kardashian-style politics now and these people know that you have to do something outrageous in order to get it on to YouTube and seen across the world," he told Melbourne radio 3AW on Tuesday. "I've got no doubt part of their motivation last night was to get as much as they could splashed around the world and feel famous for five minutes." Controversial alt-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos lashed out at the left-aligned campaigners claiming the protests at his event were caused by 'petulant babies'. A police officer was injured and two protesters arrested in a violent clash outside alt-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos' Melbourne event. The former Breitbart News tech editor called the protesters "petulant babies" for coming out against him. "There was a lot of kerfuffle out front, it was not as the newspapers reported 'a clash between the far left and far right' it was the left, showing up, being violent to stop freedom of speech," Mr Yiannopoulos told 2GB radio on Tuesday. "Your politicians are a mess and your media is a mess, but ordinary Australians seem to be getting it," he added. Hundreds of protesters from left-aligned Campaign Against Racism and Fascism and two right-wing groups, Reclaim Australia and the True Blue Crew, rallied with a heavy police presence attempting to maintain order. Despite dozens of officers working to keep the groups separate, at least two men were pepper sprayed after they started fighting, with others joining in. "Simply because his (Milo Yiannopoulos) views are different from the status quo," Mr Costas said.
