President Donald Trump’s talks trade, politics and job training in Iowa

Des Moines Register PEOSTA, Ia.— President Donald Trump displayed John-Deere-green hats bearing the slogan “Make Farmers Great Again” during his visit to Peosta Thursday, telling Iowa farmers they won’t be “too angry with Trump” following an apparent trade agreement with European leaders. “I have to say, because we have a lot of farmers in this place, we had this hat made up. Kim Reynolds, who participated in the forum, told reporters after the event that the conversations about opening up European markets are “hopefully a positive step.” “China has been a bad actor,” she said. “There’s no place doing better than Iowa,” he said. “We have a lot of federal people out here, some incredible people. Trump praised Blum, giving him credit for securing $117 million in federal funds to support flood mitigation efforts in Cedar Rapids. The visit is Trump’s third to the state since he was elected in 2016. “We have so many companies moving back to the United States now, and what we need is talented people,” he said. Kevin Lake, 31, of Sioux City, who wore a hat that read, “Make America Great Again,” clutched a photo that Trump signed for him at the airport. “But in the end the tariffs will work in America’s favor.” The crowd cheered Trump again as he got into his black presidential limousine and headed the 14 miles to Northeast Iowa Community College for the workforce discussion.

The Atlantic Politics & Policy Daily: Ag-itated

Written by Elaine Godfrey (@elainejgodfrey), Maddie Carlisle (@maddiecarlisle2), and Olivia Paschal (@oliviacpaschal) Today in 5 Lines Special Counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly examining President Trump’s tweets as part of his investigation into potential obstruction of justice. House Speaker Paul Ryan said he opposes an attempt by the House Freedom Caucus to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing Mueller’s inquiry. Representative Jim Jordan, who is facing allegations that he failed to report sexual abuse when he was a wrestling coach at Ohio State University, announced he would run for House speaker. The Trump administration faces a court-appointed deadline Thursday evening to reunite families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, but more than 900 kids won’t be reunited with their parents. During a visit to Iowa, Trump touted his limited trade deal with Europe as a win for American farmers. On Politics: Barletta stands by the president; will it pay off?

Matt Rourke | AP photo Back on the 2016 campaign trail, candidate Donald Trump called Lou Barletta and Tom Marino “Thunder and Lightning.” They were early supporters, and the popular Keystone State congressmen certainly brought added electricity to Trump’s appearances in Pennsylvania. Shortly after the election, President-elect Trump rewarded Thunder and Lightning with positions on his transition team. A joint report by The Washington Post and 60 Minutes found that legislation sponsored by Marino helped make it easier for opioid drugs to circulate, enabling the drug industry to profit while users suffered. Trump said he would “look into” Marino. “Tom is a fine man and a great Congressman!” Trump tweeted. Without using the president’s name, Marino issued a caution. He did not criticize the president or Putin. As my colleague Bill O’Boyle points out, no independent poll puts Barletta within striking distance of Casey. On Monday, Barletta appeared with Vice President Mike Pence in Philadelphia at a campaign fundraiser and at an event promoting the Trump administration’s tax cuts. And the only poll that counts is the one in November, Just ask President Donald J. Trump.

More than 700 anti-Trump protests planned across all 50 states

Organizers of demonstrations expected to take place across all 50 states on Saturday are calling for Americans outraged by Donald Trump’s immigration policies and the prospect of a supreme court swinging sharply right to put aside party differences and protest with one voice. “This is an all hands on deck, stop the madness moment. It’s not a red or blue thing,” the national protest organizer, Ai-jen Poo, told the Guardian. More than 750 events are planned across the country on 30 June, under the slogan “Families belong together”, to protest against the separation of more than 2,000 children from their parents in recent weeks after they crossed the border illegally under the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” crackdown. Poo said the protests were primarily for people who had been horrified at the news of the separations and detentions, but she said the cause would widen into a show of opposition against Trump’s travel ban, which targets five Muslim-majority countries and was upheld by the supreme court this week, as well as the threat of Trump nominating a hard-right conservative for the supreme court seat vacated by Justice Anthony Kennedy. The largest demonstration is planned for Washington DC, with many thousands expected to gather close to the White House, including Poo, who is a union leader and the director of the national domestic workers alliance, the Hamilton musical creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and other figures such as the actor and activist America Ferrera. Mass protests are also expected in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and other big cities. This is a time when we reflect on where we are as a country She dubbed the administration’s immigration policy “zero humanity” and “a moral atrocity” and said the main thrusts of Saturday’s events were to demand that families be reunited, call for an end to “zero tolerance” and an end to immigration detention, even where families are kept together. Beyond the issue of family separations, the attorney general, Jeff Sessions, announced earlier this month that domestic or gang violence, which is rife in many parts of Central America and Mexico, will no longer be regarded as valid reasons for seeking asylum in the US. Susan Sarandon arrested at anti-Trump protest Read more Sarsour said plans for the demonstrations on Saturday had been given new impetus by the news last week that the supreme court had upheld Trump’s travel ban.
