307 Politics: Why Foster Friess isn’t Donald Trump

Welcome to 307 Politics, where it’s all governor’s race news all the time. “What a great day in Wyoming!” Friess says, as the camera pans left. For Friess, the most obvious overlap with Trump is that they are both wealthy guys with longtime interest in politics who never ran for public office, until they did. It’s easy to say that the “government” should never be involved in private enterprise, but much harder to allow the Casper Events Center to shutter for lack of a hefty city subsidy. Most national policies that Trump ran on are unlikely to have an immediate impact on voters. Trump has a handful of other advantages that Friess either simply does not possess, or does not seem interested in pursuing. While he may not have crafted a public persona for himself over the years, Friess did successfully manage and grow what become a major investment fund. MCCAIN OVERSHADOWS LUNCH -- After former Trump adviser Steve Bannon tried to find a challenger for Barrasso last fall, the Wyoming senator began highlighting his closeness with Trump, eventually inviting him lunch with Republican senators. GOVERNOR CANDIDATES ON THE ECONOMY -- The Wyoming Business Alliance hosted a forum for the governor candidates last week and it does not appear that anyone has figured out how to painlessly diversify the state’s economy yet. -- “We’re in a big jam, we have like almost a billion dollar deficit each year,” Friess told reporter Jonathan Gallardo.
