Finley and Henderson: Forging friendships across the political divide

We really listen to each other when we’re debating or arguing. And that exercise in listening is the essential element in building and maintaining civil personal relationships with those with whom you disagree. You have to make the effort to understand the experiences and values that shape another person's outlook. That's the objective of the Detroit Regional Chamber's Civility Project, which the two of us are hosting. We’re talking about how we deal, one-on-one, with someone who comes honestly to a different set of conclusions about politics, policy and the world. The idea grew out of a session we did two years ago for National Public Radio's Story Corps project. That informs his belief that the institutions of society, when challenged and held accountable, are the best hope for creating fair and equitable communities. We also came to the important realization that two people can look at the same set of facts, apply their individual experiences and values, and come up with different opinions. Most important, we've learned friends don't have to be ideological carbon copies. There's more to us than just our politics.

A Princess Diana biographer claims Prince Harry’s friends take issue with Meghan Markle’s ‘ultra-liberal’...

Chris Jackson/Getty Images Prince Harry's friends are reportedly not fans of Meghan Markle's political opinions. Lady Colin Campbell revealed in an interview that Meghan Markle is "ultra-liberal" and that it's "an issue" with Harry's friends. She also said Markle does not like royal pastimes like shooting. To an outsider skimming paparazzi photos and magazine spreads, a life in Kensington Palace looks like the closest thing to a fairy-tale ending a person can achieve. Lady Colin Campbell, author of "The Queen's Marriage" and "The Real Diana" and claimed confidante of Princess Diana, told The Daily Beast that Prince Harry's friends take issue with the new princess' politics. "Her politics are an issue," she told the outlet. One of the reported problems is Markle's dislike for royal pastimes like shooting. Campbell also spoke about the solitary nature of being a royal: "Everybody discovers after marrying into the royal family how solitary and arduous an existence it can be. Although Markle seems to be stepping into her royal role with ease publicly, a source told People that she "has lost touch with some of her close friends from before the wedding, which has been tough" and that "she's finding it hard to know who to trust." INSIDER reached out to Kensington Palace for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Friends divided in politics: Steve Scalise, Cedric Richmond appear together on CBS

The friendship of two Louisiana congressmen -- Republican Steve Scalise and Democrat Cedric Richmond -- should be an example for their fellow lawmakers at a time when many in the United States sit at odds with one another, the two men told Margaret Brennan during an interview for "Face The Nation," which aired on CBS on Sunday (June 17). "The division in this country right now, I believe, is at one of the highest peaks during my generation, and hopefully we can start to bridge that divide by leading by example," Richmond said when Brennan asked the congressmen whether their friendship or the national divisions are "more reflective of where we are as a country." "There's no excuse, it's completely unacceptable, to resort to violence to try to resolve some kind of disagreement when you have somebody with -- that you have with them politically," he said. While the interview remained largely cordial, with both Scalise and Richmond advocating the other's abilities to lead, the congressmen did not hide where their differences lie. Immigration, tax cuts and healthcare are just a few of the issues the two do not agree on -- as well as what the House will look like come November. Scalise has been named as a possible successor for current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, and Richmond said he supports his colleague. I just want him to be in the minority." In response, Scalise said Richmond would make a "great minority leader." He went on to say he believes both himself and Richmond will be reelected, but that the Republican Party will still hold the majority. The "Face the Nation" interview was filmed the day before the annual congressional baseball game, where Richmond pitched the Democrats to victory, 21-5 Scalise was visibly limping during the game, a year after the 52-year-old congressman was shot in the hip while practicing for the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game for Charity.

“Fox & Friends” Putting Finishing Touches on Trump’s State of the Union Address

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—With just one day until Donald J. Trump’s first State of the Union address, the cast of “Fox and Friends” is working furiously on the final draft of the speech, members confirmed today. “We’ve really been burning the midnight oil,” Steve Doocy, the host of the Fox program, said. “We have so much to say tomorrow night, and we want to get it all in there.” Doocy said that when he read the first draft of the State of the Union address last week, he “kind of flipped out” when he realized that there was “absolutely no mention of Hillary Clinton’s Hydra-like tentacles controlling the Deep State.” “The State of the Union address is the President’s chance to tell the American people where the country is and where it’s going,” Doocy said. “You can’t do that without talking about how Crooked Hillary is funnelling her Russian-uranium riches directly into Bob Mueller’s bank account in the Seychelles.” While Trump reportedly has had input from other sources, including the Fox News anchor Sean Hannity, the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and several neo-Nazi Twitter accounts, Doocy said that the cast of “Fox & Friends” has final approval of the version that Trump will read Tuesday night. “Someone has to have the last word,” Doocy said. “There are a lot of voices in President Trump’s head, and that’s not including the actual voices that are always in his head.”
