Harvard Institute of Politics announces new fellows

The Harvard Institute of Politics announced its new slate of fall fellows in a video the organization tweeted on Monday. The five resident fellows, who remain on campus for the duration of the semester, come from a variety of backgrounds, including journalism and public office. They include: Journalist Margaret Talev, a senior White House correspondent for Bloomberg and a CNN political analyst, who served as president of the White House Correspondents Association; Amy Dacey, former CEO of the Democratic National Committee and former executive director of Emily’s List; activist Brittany Packnett, the vice president of national community alliances for Teach for America and cofounder of Campaign Zero, which is focused on solutions to ending police violence, according to the organization’s website. Retired politician Joseph J. Heck is the only former congressman among this year’s fellows. A physician and former US representative for Nevada’s third district, Heck was also a brigadier general in the US Army. John Noonan, currently a senior defense adviser for Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark. ), previously advised 2016 presidential candidate Jeb Bush on issues of national security and served as a defense policy adviser to Mitt Romney during Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. All three visiting fellows this fall are current or former mayors: Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles; Mitchell “Mitch” Landrieu of New Orleans; and Michael Nutter of Philadelphia. They will co-lead a study group on Politics, Potholes, and Public Service, according to the Institute’s website. Kaya Williams can be reached at kaya.williams@globe.com.

Bitcoin in Politics: Fellow Democrats Clash Over Accepting Cryptocurrency Donations

Fellow Democrats Dave Min and Brian Forde clashed over accepting cryptocurrencies as donations while running for California’s 45th Congressional race. Back in September 2017, Austin Petersen, a Senate candidate in Missouri also began accepting Bitcoin for campaign contributions. Winston Edmonson, a four-time mayoral candidate in the Texas city of Lewisville, proposed the issuance of a municipal cryptocurrency as means of funding the local police force without having to raise taxes. As such, one would expect for it to be substantiated with facts, as politics is all about hard facts and decisions based on them, right? According to Axios, Min’s campaign manager failed to provide any reasonable merit for these serious accusations. As a matter of fact, as if she’s realized that the ad might have gone a bit too far, she states that while Min “is a huge believer in the potential of distributed ledger technology,” his primary concerns are focused towards some “deregulatory agenda being pushed by Bitcoin and cryptocurrency enthusiasts.” Despite refusing to provide any straightforward specifics, Min’s campaign manager pointed towards Brock Pierce as one of Forde’s leading Bitcoin donors. To this, Forde responded that: Pierce, while extremely controversial, has never publicly said he opposes ‘cracking down on drug deals and human trafficking.’ Indeed, starting beef of that kind seems quite sensational, but it should at least be backed by certain spot-on facts so that it doesn’t deflate as soon as someone questions it. Yes, Bitcoin is used by criminals, and so are other digital currencies. So much so, in fact, that it has been confirmed by official authorities and institutions throughout the entire world. Do you agree with Dave Min’s position on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies’ usage for human trafficking and drug deals?

In John Bolton, Trump Finds a Fellow Political Blowtorch. Will Foreign Policy Burn?

WASHINGTON — Shortly after Ambassador John R. Bolton was sent to represent the United States at the United Nations, an institution he had long scorned as an anti-American citadel of corruption, he hosted President George W. Bush for a visit. Mr. Bolton, who takes over Monday as President Trump’s third national security adviser with Syria as his most immediate challenge, and talks with North Korea and the future of the Iranian nuclear deal not far behind, loves nothing more than a good target. North Korea. “I don’t know how that will work out. To those who say I’m going to start a war, that’s what I think.” Some of Mr. Bolton’s harshest critics are those who once worked with him. “This will be the scariest thing that’s happened to us in 50 years,” said Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff to Mr. Powell when he was secretary of state. He loves the combat.” Mr. Hadley, Ms. Rice and other Bush veterans privately cautioned against Mr. Bolton being named deputy secretary of state when Mr. Trump took office. When the elder George Bush was elected, Mr. Baker named Mr. Bolton assistant secretary of state for international organizations. “I don’t do war,” he recalled Mr. Bolton replying. “It was very consistent with John’s view that we don’t need international staffs, we don’t need new institutions, we just need countries to work together,” said Robert Joseph, an ally on the National Security Council staff.
