Island women talk race, politics, and more in national forum

(Editor's Note: The Staten Island Advance is partnering with Spaceship Media in The Many: A Conversation Across Divides, a moderated Facebook conversation for women of all political stripes. STATEN ISLAND -- What does a fiscally conservative and socially liberal attorney from Richmond Town, a wine shop owner and progressive Democrat from the North Shore, and a hairstylist from South Beach who identifies as an Independent, have in common? They are a few of more than 300 women around the country participating in civil political discussions on a range of topics on a social media group called "The Many." From race, to abortion rights, national politics and the future of the Democratic party, The Many is a group where women across the political spectrum can have a "civil conversation" with one another about virtually any topic. Over a recent weekend, several Staten Island women participated in a discussion about the Trump administration's family separation policy ahead of a nationwide protests calling on the White House to end its zero tolerance immigration policy. For weeks, the White House has come under scrutiny for separating thousands of children from their parents and detaining them for crossing the U.S. border. "How disgraceful that our country has taken children away from parents, criminalized asylum seekers and now the President has 'solved' the problem he created by incarcerating children with their parents?" "My personal opinion prior to the executive order being signed was that separation of these children from their parents was disgraceful and will forever be a stain on our history," Victoria Ferrantelli Wickman, a Republican from Richmond Town who works as an attorney, wrote. Wickman said she joined The Many to participate in a forum where women could be honest about their views without getting attacked by others. "When I saw that this was people having to agree that they would have to be civil and not go to low blows and name calling and just try and explore the other person's perspective and ideology, it just seemed like it was a good forum to try and see how it would work out," she said.

On Father’s Day, Skip the Politics

“Write about how you still love me even though I support President Trump.” I laughed. Of course I still love him. I found it hard to focus at work. With my beloved father-in-law, though, it isn’t hard to remember that truth at all. This is a man who grew up during the Depression, raised by a single mother in the home of his grandparents, Irish Catholic immigrants. Image He remembers riding his bicycle past the rural airport where a man had taken his airplane apart and spent weeks putting it back together, day after day. My own father consistently canceled my vote — from the very first election I voted in until the very last election of his life. But there was never any question about our love for each other. We both cared enough to be informed. The president is polarizing and poisoning the country I love, but I won’t let him poison this family, too.

Facebook and Instagram launch US political ad labeling and archive

Instead, it’s now launching its previously announced “paid for by” labels on political and issue ads on Facebook and Instagram in the U.S. and its publicly searchable archive of all these politics-related ads that run in the U.S. That includes ads run by news publishers or others that promote articles with political content. The labeling won’t just apply to candidate and election ads, but those dealing with political issues such as “abortion, guns, immigration or foreign policy.” Clicking through the labels that appear at the top of these News Feed ads will lead to the archive, which isn’t backdated and will only include ads from early May 2018 and after. It also will display the ad’s budget, and the number of people who saw it, plus aggregated, anonymized data on their age, gender and location. Any advertiser that wants to run political ads must now go through Facebook’s authorization process that requires them to reveal their identity and location, and advertisers will only have a week’s grace period starting today before those unauthorized will have their ads paused. The reviewers and AI will analyze these ads’ images, text and the outside websites to which they point to look for political content. Their buyer will then be required to go through the authorization process before they can buy more. As part of work with Facebook’s new commission investigating social media’s impact on elections, it plans to provide a database available via a forthcoming API that will let watchdog groups, academics and researchers review how ads are being used. Simply listing those organizations in the Paid For By labels or archive won’t necessarily give users a lot of information about who the people behind the money are unless they’re willing to go digging across the internet themselves. An example of a “Paid for by” label on an Instagram ad For example, the notorious conservative political donors the Koch brothers funnel cash through a PAC called Prosperity Action to fund Republican candidates like Paul Ryan. But Harbath described on the call how even though all the monitoring of political ads will cost more than the revenue the company earns from them, Facebook felt it necessary to “make sure people have a way to express themselves and engage in political discourse in a transparent way.” Self-policing in this manner could reduce the urgency of calls to pass the Honest Ads Act that was unveiled last year to bring online advertising disclosures in line with those for television, though Congress has yet to hold a hearing about.

Democrats Wrestle With Politics In Diversity Discussion

Typically, diversity for the Democratic Party has meant re-nominating Denise Nappier, who is African American, to run for state treasurer. John Blankley is white. There is talk that some Democrats are looking to avoid acrimony and possibly win back the support of the black community by making sure Wooden, a former Hartford city council president, walks away with the endorsement without a primary. “Democratic voters should be allowed to judge the merits of the candidates for themselves,” Bhargava said. “From the beginning our simple ask was that delegates and voters choose who is best for the state treasurer office,” Arulampalam said Thursday. He said their message has resonated with a lot of people and “I hope the delegates will choose the person they want to see serve in the treasurer’s office.” Wooden’s campaign said the reason they’re picking up delegate support is his track record. ”Shawn Wooden is the right pick for state treasurer because of his diverse investment experience, progressive values, and vision for the future,” Brett Broesder, a spokesperson for the Wooden campaign said. Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin has also endorsed Wooden, even though the Hartford delegates seem to be split between Arulampalam and Wooden. New Haven has 97 delegates, Bridgeport has 90, and Hartford has 78 delegates. Vincent Mauro Jr., head of New Haven’s Democratic Town Committee, said he doesn’t believe there’s any sort of coordination regarding his delegates when it comes to the race for treasurer.

The Politics of Data Privacy in a Post-Cambridge Analytica World

It is now six weeks since the Cambridge Analytica scandal rocked Facebook. Potential sea change — in the sense that Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica problem was only the most visible example of a much broader and deeper phenomenon. The core business model of many tech firms is monetizing the data they collect from users — not only for themselves but also for selling on to others. But there is a powerful political dynamic right below the surface: The more visible and widely understood the tech business model of monetizing user-generated data becomes, the more people will be upset about it — and the more likely government will try to respond through some sort of regulation (even if the regulation is misguided, ineffective or both). Facebook and Google are so big that there is a plausible prima facie argument that they can no longer be regulated by market forces; the government will have to step in. Given that their core business model is monetizing information on the behavior of users, the concern is about 21st century consumer protection on an unprecedented scale. Consumer protection is different from regulating tech firms like media companies (the other oft-cited “existential risk” to tech). Big advantages to tech companies that can demonstrate a history of taking data and privacy concerns more seriously, and/or whose business doesn’t rely heavily on monetizing user data. Big challenges for other industries that combine high tech with using personal data to drive the business — and hence where consumer protection looms large. Facebook/Cambridge Analytica swallowed all the media headlines because of its tie-in with Trump/Russia.
