Bill to allow armed teachers passes Senate panel

The panel’s recommendation that schools be given the option to arm teachers was met with mixed reaction. But other groups disagreed, including several on hand Monday. Representatives from Moms Demand Action voiced concerns that having guns inside classrooms could put students at risk, especially if the students have the ability to get access to the gun. The League of Women Voters and Florida PTA also spoke out in opposition. And the Florida Democratic Party (FDP) put out a statement condemning the committee after the measure was approved. As we approach the anniversary of the Parkland shooting, it is shameful that instead of honoring the victims Republicans are trying to put more guns in our schools.” Republicans on the committee, including Committee Chair Manny Diaz, pointed out that the recommendation originated from the MSD Commission’s report. And when several speakers voiced concern over teachers being given the task of defending students, Republican Sen. Dennis Baxley pushed back, pointing out that the bill merely gives teachers the option to undergo Guardian training and carry on campus. “No educator is required to be a Guardian,” Baxley said. “No educator is required to carry any kind of defensive weapon. “I do understand that no educator is asked or required to be a Guardian,” Berman said.

Election Preview 2018: 92nd Legislative District

“The first thing the Pennsylvania House should address in the new term is cleaning up our state government. The people of Pennsylvania want politicians that care about what the people care about, not just what the large-dollar donors and special interests are pushing. The amount of money influencing the decisions made in the capitol is astounding, and this is not the way our government was intended to work. Gerrymandering has put Pennsylvania in the spotlight this year, and while we have new congressional districts, our state legislators were unaffected by the change. We need to get redistricting out of the hands of politicians who want to save their own jobs by choosing their voters, and into the hands of an independent commission who can draw lines that truly represent the people of our commonwealth.” +2 Education: Bachelor’s in government and politics from George Mason University; graduate studies in public administration at Penn State University Endorsements: National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), PA Farm Bureau PAC, PA State Chamber, National Rifleman’s Association (NRA) and PA Fraternal Order of Police What do you think should be the first thing the House addresses in the new term? “We have to address property taxes in Pennsylvania, and the only way we can begin to tackle this issue is as follows: 1. Establish a law that would not allow the confiscation of a person’s primary dwelling for lack of property tax payment. Implement the fair funding formula on all education dollars, not just new monies, as currently exists in law. Rein in regulations that are costly and taking dollars from the actual education of students 4. Shift from property tax to an earned income tax, sales tax expansion/increase, another broad-based tax or a combination of the aforementioned.
