Obama and former AG Holder announce new campaign to combat gerrymandering

Former President Barack Obama’s nonprofit political organization is teaming up with his former Attorney General to launch a campaign against gerrymandering. The “All On The Line” campaign - which will also work to protect the Affordable Care Act, reduce gun violence, and expand voting rights – is part of a push in recent years by high-profile Democrats to curtail the use of gerrymandering across the country. “For too long, politicians have been able to pick their voters, instead of allowing voters to choose their representatives,” Eric Holder said in a statement. Gerrymandering has become a hot topic in recent years. State legislatures in Wisconsin and Michigan have been heavily criticized after Republicans have moved to curtail the powers of Democrats elected in November. “Our mission is to restore fairness to our democracy and ensure every American has an equal say in our government,” Holder said. “There is not a moment to waste,” Holder said in his statement. “With the census in 2020 and redistricting in 2021, we have to start building our movement now.” The Supreme Court is also plunging back into the issue of whether electoral districts can be too partisan. The court took up the issue of partisan gerrymandering last term in cases from Wisconsin and the same Maryland district, but the justices failed to reach a decision on limiting political line-drawing for political gain. Fox News' Kelly Chernenkoff and Louis Casiano and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Barack Obama Goes All In Politically To Fight Gerrymandering

It ends the six-year existence of OFA, formed out of the pieces of Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, which at times struggled to find footing with a clear mission. People want compressive immigration reform, Congress ignores it,” Obama said in a call with top supporters on Thursday night. Then in 2018, the group—which had always insisted it wasn’t about electoral politics—shifted into organizing for Democrats running in the midterms. The merging of the organizations will begin almost immediately, building off a working relationship the groups formed during the 2018 midterms. He argued that those would move if the state legislatures and House districts elect members who are more representative of the voting public than the current lines allow. “If you say, ‘The Obama legacy will then be focused on redistricting,’ that’s the mechanism by which the things the Obama presidency were about will be preserved,” Holder said. The issue of gerrymandering has exploded in politics in the last two years, in part due to moves like the Wisconsin and Michigan legislatures moving after the November elections to cut back the powers of the Democrats who won. Not every OFA supporter will move to redistricting. Over the next few months, OFA officials will work to pair members who prioritize other issues with groups that focus on those. Holder will hold his own conference call with OFA supporters on Jan. 7 to begin providing details of the merger.

Jaimes: There is simply no space for incivility in politics

Each video, accompanied by dramatic background music, features snippets of speeches and violent acts by leftists in America. The ads expose the danger incivility is creating in politics. These acts of violence are included in the trend of vandalizing political offices around the country. Incivility is not solely dominated by leftists. A campaign rally in Montana last week featured President Donald Trump praising Montana Rep. Greg Gianforte for body slamming a journalist in May 2017. As Maxine Waters calls for push back against members of the Trump Cabinet, she forgets the violent attacks that Republicans such as Rand Paul and Steve Scalise have suffered in the past. Scalise was one of many targets of a gunman who opened fire at a GOP practice for the congressional baseball game. After leftist activists tweeted to “Never let Collins have a moment of peace in public again,” they owe an apology to Sen. Susan Collins’ husband, who was sent an envelope of what was suspected to be ricin. The letter was later found to be nonhazardous, but one of the many threats Collins and her staff have faced. In August, the Dubuque office of Rep. Rod Blum was vandalized with a gallon of white paint being thrown at the building.

America Descends Into the Politics of Rage

The rise of organized party politics in the so-called Age of Jackson brought with it an aggressive anger-spiked style of political warfare. The bullying power of Southern entitlement showed its full force in Congress. Representative John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts deliberately tried to put Southerners “in a blaze” over the issue of slavery. When it came to congressional combat, Northerners weren’t fighting men of the same sort as Southerners. And in time, that logic spread. The intensification of the nation’s ongoing slavery crisis fueled a spike in Southern bullying in Congress, and that anger proved contagious. The telegraph circulated news from Washington with remarkable speed, confronting increasing numbers of Americans with images of raging slaveholders holding dominion in Congress. Rage begat rage, and Northern noncombatants became fighting men, making cross-sectional discourse ever more difficult. Such is the impact of a politics of anger. But bullying power holders often pay a price, fueling a backlash through the contagion of rage.
