Economy not good. ‘Reward Work, Not Wealth’ reveals how the global economy enables a wealthy elite to accumulate vast fortunes while hundreds of millions of people are struggling to survive on poverty pay. It would cost $2.2 billion a year to increase the wages of all 2.5 million Vietnamese garment workers to a living wage. Across the world, women consistently earn less than men and are usually in the lowest paid and least secure forms of work. Oxfam is calling for governments to ensure our economies work for everyone and not just the fortunate few: Limit returns to shareholders and top executives, and ensure all workers receive a minimum ‘living’ wage that would enable them to have a decent quality of life. At current rates of change, it will take 217 years to close the gap in pay and employment opportunities between women and men. Oxfam estimates a global tax of 1.5 percent on billionaires’ wealth could pay for every child to go to school. Results of a new global survey commissioned by Oxfam demonstrates a groundswell of support for action on inequality. “It’s hard to find a political or business leader who doesn’t say they are worried about inequality. They want to see workers paid a living wage; they want corporations and the super-rich to pay more tax; they want women workers to enjoy the same rights as men; they want a limit on the power and the wealth which sits in the hands of so few.

Trump assails Fed as the ‘only problem our economy has’

President Donald Trump lashed out at the Federal Reserve on Monday after administration officials spent the weekend trying to assure the public and financial markets that Jerome Powell’s job as Fed chairman was safe. “The only problem our economy has is the Fed,” the president tweeted Monday. “They don’t have a feel for the Market, they don’t understand necessary Trade Wars or Strong Dollars or even Democrat Shutdowns over Borders. The Fed is like a powerful golfer who can’t score because he has no touch — he can’t putt!” On Wall Street, stocks had already been down but intensified their fall after Trump’s tweet. Markets are facing their worst month in a decade over fears about a U.S. trade war with China, a slowing global economy and chaos in the Trump White House. By the close of a holiday-shortened trading session Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had sunk 653 points for the day — 2.9 percent. It ensures that central bankers can make politically unpopular decisions, such as fighting high inflation in the 1980s or rescuing banks after the 2008 financial crisis. Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, a senior Republican on the Banking Committee, has cautioned against removing Powell. Fed officials voted unanimously to increase rates last week. The president expressed his displeasure Monday with the Fed after Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin had tweeted on Saturday that Powell’s job was safe.

Hundreds in Lebanon Protest Politics, Economy

Hundreds of Lebanese took to the streets of Beirut Sunday to protest a deteriorating economy and a political stalemate that has their country’s lawmakers struggling to form a government. The protesters marched to the government building in central Beirut, some wearing yellow vests, akin to those worn by protesters in France and other countries in recent weeks. The crowds grew rowdy and protesters pelted security forces with water bottles and scuffled with soldiers. The army appealed for calm in a statement, urging protesters to remain peaceful. Lebanese lawmakers have failed to agree to a national unity government some seven months after general elections failed to elect an absolute majority. Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri said on Friday that he hoped to finalize an agreement this weekend but senior politicians derailed any hopes Saturday saying new snags had developed in the talks. Lebanon's economy is on the brink of collapse and France has warned that the country could soon miss out on much-needed aid, agreed to in Paris earlier this year, if the political deadlock continues.
