Government Oversight: Business leaders weigh in on politics

One of the more fascinating aspects of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Eggs and Issues legislative breakfast occurs before the meeting begins in earnest. Thirty-five of the 82 votes (or 43 percent) supported the idea. Sometimes that money reflects back to the businesses.” >> Some issues had overwhelming support from the audience, including expansion of broadband internet to rural areas (87 percent), more state investment in workforce development programs (67 percent) and expansion of the state’s First Class pre-kindergarten program (75 percent). >> The audience also widely supported an increase in the state gas tax to help improve the state’s road and bridge system with 73 percent of the vote. Of course the question included the phrase “crumbling” to describe the state’s road infrastructure, so that might have impacted the vote somewhat. The state’s gas tax has not increased since 1992, and officials see it as a way to further road improvements at the city and county levels. “I’d be lying to myself and you if I said we thought we could resurface all of the county’s roads (with current funds),” he said. The resurfacing of Cumbie Road in western Houston County and the resurfacing of Willie Varnum Road in the southern end of the county are on the agenda. Meeting schedule: In addition to the Houston County Commission, which occurs Monday at 10 a.m. at the Houston County Administrative Building, the following governing bodies will also meet this week: Government Oversight, a government notebook compiled by reporter Jeremy Wise, appears each Monday in the Dothan Eagle and at DothanEagle.com.
