To Defend Ilhan Omar, Democrats Use Identity Politics as a Shield

And once again, a low moment centered around one of the Democrats’ celebrity House freshmen, Ilhan Omar. Bernie Sanders called Trump racist: Ilhan Omar is a leader with strength and courage. Where is the regret over its rhetoric in the Kavanaugh confirmation battle? When the moment suits, then Omar and Ocasio-Cortez are the powerful voices of a new generation — in Ocasio-Cortez’s case, powerful enough to get Democratic presidential front-runners to immediately and eagerly sign on to her “Green New Deal.” Omar and her allies were powerful enough to get the Democrats to water down their condemnation of her blatant anti-Semitism. And make no mistake, their identity is part of their power. But then when the moment changes, the meaning of their identity changes. When Republicans attack, there is indignation. The powerful are attacking the powerless. They cannot work diligently to elevate Omar’s voice and then rule out of bounds attacks against the person they’ve elevated — especially when her own words are often hateful and cruel. But powerful people are responsible for their words and ideas, and when Omar goes too far, it is not racist — nor is it incitement — to call her to account.

Pelosi says Trump using 9/11 images for ‘political attack’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has weighed in on the most recent controversy involving Rep. Ilhan Omar, retweeting video edited to suggest that the Minnesota Democrat was dismissive of the significance of the Sept. 11 attacks. Trump on Friday tweeted, “WE WILL NEVER FORGET!” Omar’s remark has drawn criticism largely from political opponents and conservatives. Omar told CAIR in Los Angeles that many Muslims saw their civil liberties eroded after the attacks, and she advocated for activism. “For far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it,” she said in the March 23 speech, according to video posted online. “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” CAIR was founded in 1994, according to its website, but its membership increased dramatically after the attacks. Many Republicans and conservative outlets expressed outrage at Omar’s remarks. “First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as ‘some people who did something,'” tweeted Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas. The retired Navy SEAL lost his right eye in 2012 in an explosion in Afghanistan. She tweeted a quote from former President George W. Bush shortly after the attacks, when he said: “‘The people — and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!” “Was Bush downplaying the terrorist attack?” Omar tweeted. “What if he was a Muslim.” Several of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates condemned Trump’s tweet.

Analysis: Political climate changes in Texas congressional districts

When political consultants were scouring the state’s 2016 election results two years ago, they found three Texas congressional districts where voters had kept Republican incumbents in office while also favoring Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. Now there are new results to pore over, courtesy of the Texas Legislative Council, and a new list of possible targets for the next election. On the other side, Cruz didn’t prevail in any of the districts won by Democratic congressional candidates. CD-7, a Houston district now represented by U.S. Rep. Lizzie Pannill Fletcher, a Democrat, was the third district on the previous election cycle’s target list — a district held by a Republican incumbent but won by Clinton. But that district’s voters, on average, remained just on the Republican side of the partisan line last year: The average Republican beat the average Democrat in statewide races by 0.2 percentage points. All three of those districts will be on anyone’s preliminary 2020 list — and would be there no matter which party’s candidate won the last election. Statewide Republicans won in that district by 4 percentage points, on average. Trump won by about 6, but O’Rourke won by 3.5 percentage points. One big difference between the 2016 and the 2018 elections in Texas was the overall strength of Democratic candidates. Republicans won every statewide race in both of those years, but the margins were very different: In 2016, the Republican candidate beat the Democratic candidate by an average of 14.1 percentage points.
