Japanese PM implores Britain not to leave EU without a deal

Japan’s prime minister has implored the UK not to leave the EU without an exit deal, saying it was “the wish of the whole world” to see Britain secure an agreement. The remarks from Shinz? Abe on a visit to London came as two cabinet ministers, Greg Clark and Gavin Williamson, traded blows over the viability of a no-deal. “That is why we truly hope that a no-deal Brexit will be avoided, and in fact that is the wish of the whole world.” Abe, a world leader who has developed one of the closest relationships with May, praised the “strong will and hard work” of the prime minister leading up to next week’s parliamentary vote on the deal. A draft plan to sell the Brexit deal that was leaked in November even suggested that Abe might be persuaded to tweet to support May’s deal, although in person in London the Japanese prime minister went further. “Japan is in total support of the draft withdrawal agreement worked out between the EU and Prime Minister May, which provides for transition to ensure legal stability for businesses that have invested into this country,” Abe said. The comments from the Japanese leader came after an impassioned intervention from Clark, the business secretary, who broke ranks with his cabinet colleagues and urged MPs to work together to block a no-deal Brexit. The business secretary has argued for a series of “indicative votes” on options including a second referendum or a Norway-style deal, in order to establish which choice could command the backing of the most MPs. Clark warned there was a danger the country could “fall into” a no deal unless MPs voted for an alternative. “What parliament needs to do is recognise that we need to put differences aside and establish agreement on a deal. It is something that has to involve the whole of parliament.

Kasich: Trump must put the country ahead of his politics

John Kasich (R) responded to President Trump's prime-time address Tuesday by calling on Democrats and Republicans to seek compromise and reach a deal to reopen the federal government. Kasich, who is mulling a potential 2020 presidential run, said in a statement that progress on a deal to reopen the government has to begin with Trump being more "flexible" on his goal to secure funding for construction of a wall or fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. "The president and the Democrats have to learn to compromise and put Americans first," Kasich, whose term as Ohio's governor ends on Jan. 14, wrote on Twitter. "Border security is important, but both sides should be willing to negotiate on how we do it." In his speech, the president invoked the recent murder of a California police officer, Cpl. Ronil Singh, whom police say was killed by an immigrant suspected of being in the country illegally. Trump called the issue of border security "a crisis of the heart, a crisis of the soul." "All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration," Trump said Tuesday night. "It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages." Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), among others, issued responses to Trump's speech Tuesday night, accusing the president of holding federal workers hostage over his demand for a wall.

Country Music Will Talk About the Hurt, but Not the Politics

Some who survived Las Vegas were there Wednesday night in Thousand Oaks. “As far as country music goes, it’s sort of no-man’s-land to really go out and make a political statement,” said Andy Albert, a songwriter based in Nashville who writes mainly for country performers. Over the last couple of years, the genre has shifted again to a gentler, less brute kind of male star: the gentleman. “It’s just sort of in the water, it’s just understood that none of these artists are trying to use this as a soapbox,” Mr. Albert said of the songs he writes for other musicians. And I think it becomes more universal when you’re able to do that.” With mass shootings regularly blanketing the news, gun control has remained one of the most intensely partisan issues in the country. Among Democrats, the opposite was true, with 83 percent thinking the group promoted policies that were “bad” for the United States. Country stars have tended to limit their statements after shootings to condolences for the victims, avoiding any gun debate. The musician Kane Brown is releasing an album called “Experiment” on Friday that includes the song “American Bad Dream.” Mr. Brown was at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas last year and performed the night of the shooting. “Before, you never saw on the news there was a shooting today,” he said. Awards, addressed the Las Vegas shooting during last year’s show, which included the faces of the victims in the “in memoriam” segment.

‘Assault on our country’: Trump sows racial division as midterms approach

With two weeks left before the midterm elections, Trump is amplifying a dark vision of what the country could look like if Democrats gain control in Congress. At campaign rallies, on Twitter and in his public commentary, he has issued urgent – if groundless – warnings about terrorists at the border, a socialist takeover and rampant crime. The so-called caravan has swelled to more than 7,000 Central Americans, many of whom have said they are fleeing poverty and violence in their native countries and dream of a better life in Mexico or the US. Yet without citing evidence, Trump has claimed the caravan is embedded with criminals, gang members and “unknown Middle Easterners”, an apparent attempt to exploit fear of terrorism and immigration. Are Donald Trump's claims about the caravan of 7,000 migrants accurate? Read more “That is an assault on our country and in that caravan you have some very bad people and we can’t let that happen to our country,” Trump said at a rally in Houston on Monday night. And then declared himself a “nationalist”, a term he typically avoids using directly about himself at such events. But in a sign that he wants to escalate the rhetoric, he shouted “use that word” to the cheering crowd. “Both in the Republican primaries and in the general election, white voters’ attitudes about African Americans, Muslims and immigration were more closely associated with how they voted than were any strictly economic concerns”. In an ad by the same name, Hunter accuses Campa-Najjar of trying to “infiltrate” the US government and accuses him of being supported by the Egyptian Islamist organization the Muslim Brotherhood.

Michael Gove admits leave campaign wrong to fuel Turkey fears

Michael Gove has admitted that the official leave campaign should not have stoked fears about Turkish immigration during the 2016 Brexit referendum. During the campaign Gove claimed that Turkey and four other countries could join the EU as soon as 2020, and their accession could lead to 5.2 million extra people moving to the UK by 2030 under free movement. The Conservative minister was asked by Tom Baldwin, a former communications director for Ed Miliband, in his book Ctrl Alt Delete whether he had been happy making appeals to “some very low sentiments” in the context of concerns over Turkish immigration. If it had been left entirely to me the leave campaign would have a slightly different feel. There is a sense at the back of my mind that we didn’t get everything absolutely right. It’s a difficult one.” Warnings about a possible Turkish accession to the EU were a controversial theme of the leave campaign and were frequently made by Gove himself. The leave campaign released a video in May 2016 arguing that “David Cameron cannot be trusted on Turkey”, to back up an argument made in a speech by the minister that if Turkey were to join the EU the impact on the NHS would be “clearly unsustainable”. In June 2016, only a couple of weeks before the final vote, Gove made a second warning about Turkey, arguing that if the country were ever to join the EU it could create a risk to security. Even at the time of the UK’s referendum, the possibility of Turkey joining the EU was seen as remote or non-existent. Theresa May, Michael Gove and Jacob Rees-Mogg: where do they stand now?
