No Politics in Stripping Thaksin’s Award, Armed Forces Say

Gen. Pornpipat Benyasri, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, told reporters the ex-premier lost his Chakdao medal in accordance with the military’s regulations, which call for awards to be rescinded if recipients “fail to deserve the honor.” “The media and Thai people may already know that answer from many websites and social media,” Pornpipat said when asked why Thaksin lost the award. “But it disturbs the ethics and values of the armed forces is any action that amounts to insulting and disrespecting higher entities.” Gen. Pornpipat did not elaborate, though the term “disrespecting higher entities” is sometimes used as a euphemism to describe hostility toward the monarchy. Thaksin, enrolled at the academy before his stint as a police officer, won the award in 1991. The former leader retains immense popularity among supporters in Thailand despite being ousted in a 2006 coup. He was later found guilty of corruption in 2008, but fled the country shortly before the verdict was handed out, citing the ruling was politically motivated. Thaksin lashed out at Sunday’s election by calling it “rigged” in favor of the junta. Writing in an op-ed to the New York Times from Hong Kong, the ex-premier said there were numerous allegations of fraud during the votes. Gen. Pornpipat said Thaksin was not stripped of the medal because of his criticism. He also said the timing has nothing to do with the current political situation. “Things can be fast and slow.

Trump Storms Out of McDonald’s After Failing to Close Six-Dollar Meal Deal

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Capping a singularly disastrous week for the Commander-in-Chief, Donald J. Trump stormed out of a Washington, D.C., McDonald’s restaurant on Friday after failing to close a six-dollar Meal Deal at the establishment. At approximately 12:30 P.M., Trump took a break from his designated “executive time” to travel to the nearby McDonald’s, where he placed an order for a Meal Deal consisting of a Quarter Pounder with cheese, fries, Coke, and an apple pie. Tracy Klugian, the McDonald’s employee who took Trump’s order, said that he was aware of Trump’s difficulty in closing deals and therefore hiked the price of the Meal Deal to twelve dollars. “I really thought he would drive a harder bargain, what with ‘The Art of the Deal’ and all,” the McDonald’s staffer said. “I was kind of surprised when he just bailed.” With the McDonald’s deal in tatters, one White House aide acknowledged that Trump “really needs a win right now,” and that he was en route to Arby’s.

Politics on late night: ‘Daily Show’ pokes fun at Nancy Pelosi, predicts ‘subpoena hell’...

“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah took a playful jab Wednesday night at possible new House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday night for celebrating a “new day in America” on Election night, saying there’s nothing “new” about her being in charge, and instead labeling her probable leadership “new-ish.” Noah also joked about the “subpoena cannon” that could soon be loaded and aimed at President Trump, and how the next two years will be “subpoena hell” for the Commander in Chief, adding that subpoenas will be coming from everywhere, including his “KFC bucket.” Noah also expressed hope that the plan for Democrats isn’t to “investigate all of Trump’s thoughts,” advising that they “should be strategic” about what they investigate since the president and top Republicans have already accused Democrats of what has been coined as “presidential harassment.” To that, “The Daily Show” presented a workplace-like PSA spoof offering advice to House Democrats on the dos and don’ts of “presidential harassment.” “Daily Show” correspondent Michael Kosta told Democrats “don’t try to touch the president’s intimate areas” like his tax returns, which is a “private area that’s reserved for the president’s wife and his Russian investors” but “do look for cues that you are making the president uncomfortable,” noting to be observant of Trump’s body language to see if he’s being “protective of his space.” “Finally, do let him harass you. And believe me, he will harass you,” Kosta said to Democrats. “That may seem unfair, but think of the president as a stripper. He can touch you but you can’t touch him… And if you ever wonder, ‘should you impeach the president?,’ think of this helpful acronym; ‘N as in No.’ I guess we could’ve just said ‘no.’”

Alex Trebek: There isn’t enough humor in politics

Alex Trebek says the answer to what’s missing from politics in the Trump era is humor. “That’s one of the things, unfortunately, that we lack in politics today. There isn’t enough humor,” the longtime “Jeopardy!” host tells Vulture in an interview published Monday. Previous commanders in chief had a knack for injecting a dose of comedic relief into the political climate, according to the game show host. But President Trump doesn’t make jokes, Trebek insists, and instead “picks on people.” “I think back to George W. Bush, who had a good sense of self-deprecating humor. Now, some would say, ‘He should have been self-deprecating because he was worthy of self-deprecation.’ But I wouldn’t agree with that necessarily,” Trebek, 78, said. “[Former President Barack] Obama also had a good sense of humor, with a pretty sharp edge. [Former President Ronald] Reagan had a good sense of humor, and not a mean-spirited one.” “But pity the fool who comes up with a funny line now,” Trebek, who was born in Canada, laments. “We are so polarized that he or she is only going to be savaged for it.” Trebek, who describes himself as an independent, says he’s never met Trump. In a 2016 chat with ITK, the game show guru predicted that then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton would win the White House, saying that Trump seemed "bent on shooting himself in the foot every time he takes a step forward, and that’s unfortunate for him.” Asked by Vulture how the president would do in a game of “Jeopardy!,” Trebek quipped that Trump “might not agree that any of the correct responses are correct.”
