Ilhan Omar Tweets U.S. Politicians’ Support for Israel Is ‘All About the Benjamins’

WASHINGTON – A new controversy involving Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar and Israel erupted on Sunday, when the Minnesota Congresswoman wrote on Twitter that support for Israel in the United States was “all about the Benjamins,” referring to Benjamin Franklin, whose image appears on $100 bills. Bad form, Congresswoman. That's the second anti-Semitic trope you've tweeted.” In reply, Omar wrote: “AIPAC!” The American Israel Public Affairs Committee is the most influential U.S. lobby group supporting the Israeli government. AIPAC responded to the controversy with a short statement: “We are proud that we are engaged in the democratic process to strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship. Our bipartisan efforts are reflective of American values and interests. We will not be deterred in any way by ill-informed and illegitimate attacks on this important work.” >> Republicans spoke up against Steve King. "Implying that Americans support Israel because of money alone is offensive," he wrote. The American Jewish Committee also criticized Omar, saying she should apologize: “Suggesting that a Jewish organization is buying off American politicians is both demonstrably false and stunningly anti-Semitic. He also accused Omar of “shameful bigoted hate-mongering.” Last month Omar apologized for saying "Israel has hypnotized the world" to carry out "evil" in a 2012 tweet. The tweet was brought up by critics after Omar's election to Congress for its alleged anti-Semitic undertones.

Bill Clinton comments on ‘separatist’ politics, Chicago violence at U of C

Hosting several young activists from around the world, former President Bill Clinton on Friday argued that harder policing isn’t the solution to Chicago violence. Chelsea Clinton also commented about the nation’s political divides in her remarks before she introduced her father at the Clinton Foundation event, held at the University of Chicago. The 42nd president said those who attack underrepresented groups do it to “fill this emotional chasm … that we think our differences matter more.” He added: “One of the things that is most disturbing about this new separatist time is, there seems to be an assumption that … in order for you to win, someone else has to lose.” Clinton’s remarks about Chicago came during a panel that included 18-year-old activist D’Angelo McDade, wounded last year in a shooting that killed his grandfather and uncle on the front porch of their West Side home. None were the intended targets. “Chicago gets high publicity for a high crime rate, a high murder rate. His group, the Peace Warrior Organization at North Lawndale College Prep, has recruited 1,129 student employees citywide. “Surviving is the only goal that I had,” said McDade, who still has a bullet fragment in his body. Why not set the trend that I’m better than what other people already said that I was.” Asked by Clinton how he relates to local police, McDade said officers can’t protect anyone if they don’t understand the communities they’re serving. “This is one beloved community … we can work together.” Also on the panel was Syrian refugee, activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Muzoon Almellehan, known for her work in Syria to keep girls there in school. “I strongly believe education is the only solution to rebuild my country and to help so many children in the world,” Almellehan said.

Chelsea Clinton for President? Bill and Hillary’s Daughter Changes Tune on Entering Politics

This is a modal window. No compatible source was found for this media. Chelsea Clinton has opened the door to a future career in politics. “At the federal level, as much as I abhor so much of what President Trump is doing, I have a great amount of gratitude for what my congresswoman and my senators are doing to try to stop him at every point,” Clinton said, according to The Guardian. “But if that were to change, if my city councillor were to retire, if my congresswoman were to retire, my senators, and I thought that I could make a positive impact, then I think I would really have to ask my answer to that question. It is scheduled for release on October 2. Clinton told Entertainment Weekly in May that the book's inspiration came from people asking whether she would write something for a young audience. “I’ve always said that you’re never too young to make a difference, and I hope this book will show young readers that it’s true.” At the festival on Monday, Clinton said there needed to be “more stories centered on women and told by women about women who have persisted. Still today the majority of children’s content, whether in picture books or cartoons, is centered on boys. This means most girls are defined by their relationship to the male characters—someone’s sister or friend.
